Watching the Beeb documentary on Scott Walker a few days ago, I couldn't get over how young the man looked - - I mean, apparently he's 64, but he barely looks 50 ! Quite remarkable. How does he manage that ? Not familiar with his work at all, but was intrigued enough with what I'd read to watch, plus some friends had been saying I had to check him out. Not entirely sure about the music, but the voice is fairly remarkable, and you can hear his influence in a whole raft of singers, including the likes of Bowie, and our own Earl Graham... Thoroughly enjoyable documentary, and would interest me sufficiently to go to "30 Century Man" when it hits the big screen. What I'd love to know is: in the long interims between albums, how does he survive financially ? Does he have sufficient royalties coming in to keep him bouyant for extended periods ? Intrigued. (jobson has apparently reformed the skids with the 2nd guitarist of BC filling the vacancy. just gigs in Scotland though) hope this githead london gig gets firmed up soon. p Fergus Kelly wrote: Watching the Beeb documentary on Scott Walker a few days ago, I couldn't get over how young the man looked - - I mean, apparently he's 64, but he barely looks 50 ! You have to write to New York or somewhere to unsubscribe, rather than click a link. Not sure this is good practice, because now when I receive one I think FFS rather than I wonder these former 80's popstars are up to today! As for the "Caledonian Television", well that's simply ridiculous. A Scottish U2 maybe, but even that flatters them. Shame because Adamson had his own style from very early on in the Skids, and I was expecting BC to be rather good. Sadly I was wrong. Going back to the Scott programme... Good stuff, my only whinge being no mention of Julian Cope who got a lot of us into Scott via Fire Escape In The Sky, though I'm told he gets a mention in the longer version. It was surely as at least partly as a result of that subsequent interest that Virgin signed him, resulting - eventually - in Climate of Hunter. Thought what Eno had to say as interesting. People wanting to sound like Roxy Music or Talking Heads (interesting he should pick those two, eh!) and things not having moved on. That may or may not be true, but SW is definitely unique. Thought there was a truthfulness about him in interview, too. But ultimately, the French guy at the end said what I was thinking about someone discovering SW for the first time and what lies ahead. I'd had visions of someone, somewhere, watching that programme and hearing those little snippets and thinking that they'd have to explore further. I hope they do - even though I must admit I find Tilt and The Drift interesting, though not necessarily enjoyable.. I'd defend his right to make them to the end, mind! But I love the first 4 Scott LP's. I like those early Walker Brother albums, too - even the cheesier moments. I could listen to that voice all day. He said he was asked to appear on the programme about the Hammersmith Palais, bearing in mind that famous slashing incident. Initially, he agreed, and the - in his words - bottled it. But yeah, for someone with an awful lot to say (and an eleoquent way of doing so) it doesn't make sense to me either! Keith PS I think you'll find that TMA documentary wasn't so recent after all, Keith. I reckon it must be 7-8yrs ago now. * Quite a weird night. He'd just finished a version of Books when some young lad walked shouting 'Teardrop Explodes, but this is shit' (it wasn't!), whilst another bloke later stood up and stuck 2 fingers at Julian for a while, walked to the aisles, stopped, stuck 2 fingers up again, before eventually walking off. Incidentally, he played old TX b-side Christ Vs Warhol, which was the first time I'd heard that live. Wasn't his best performace on the keyboard, mind! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 24 May 2007 19:36:33 EDT From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] not so great Scotts! >>But yeah, for someone with an awful lot to say (and an eleoquent way of doing so) it doesn't make sense to me either!<< He kind of disowns Scott Walker half way through one of his books. Some time post-Climate of Hunter but before Tilt, and the subsequent hailing of SW as a genius. Perhaps he feared someone might remember this?
