I brought Republic home, put the CD into my stereo, played "Regret" at high volume, and then spent the rest of the album wondering, "Where did Hook's bass go?". The bass lines are either missing or buried during much of that album. Still, "Spooky" is a great track and I'm also into "Special", "Young Offender", and a few others. I maintain, though, that "World" was a hugely disappointing second single after "Regret". For me, the New Order material released during the 90's (well, I guess there was only one album of theirs released in that decade), pales in comparison to the first self-titled Electronic album. Electronic never got a lot of attention here in the States, but I bought the first album on the day of release in 1991 and played it non-stop all through that summer. It's one of my all-time favorite albums to this day. I like the second Electronic album, Raise The Pressue, better than most and the third one, Twisted Tenderness, ain't bad either. The recent single-disc Electronic compilation from Rhino Records is worth a listen for the two previously-unreleased outtakes that could have been singles in their own right. My understanding is that it's an abridged version of 30 Century Man, though I could be wrong. I'm staggered that a programme that might in fact be interesting hasn't been confined to BBC4 (which I don't receive). It's a highly enjoyable film, so I'd recommend seeing it if this is all you're likely to get in the near future.
