Got everything else right. On an aside note... Githead's Art Pop arrived at my doorstep on Saturday, along with the T-shirt. Very impressed and this is some of the most accessible Colin Newman stuff that I've heard in recent memory. "All Set Up" is one that I tend to have on repeat. The Record is pretty darn good as well, Much more rounded and drawn from a broader palette than the previous effort I reckon and full of moments that remind me of CNs early 80s solo stuff and certainly loads of references that will remind you of Wire Mk 2 and a nod perhaps to what R&B Wire might have progressed on to. Opener 'On Your Own' fools you into thinking its Git-business as usual (chugging riff, standard minimal Gotobedesque 4/4 beat) until the surprisingly Radio-friendly chorus kicks in (and brings a smile to fans of Silk Skin Paws) Theres lots of changes in pace and style, veering from neat Pop songs to more moody pieces like Lifeloops which Malka intones over a woozy Acoustic guitar loop. I guess thats the Art & Pop mix. Drive By is closest to R&B era Wire here and features Colin sounding very cross about spam emails... Jet Ear Game features someone reading what sounds like a Githead review thru a vocoder over a quirky instrumental that prompted me to dig out "..The Singing Fish" for comparisons All Set Up is another big Pop moment and another whopping great reference for Wire fans featuring as it does a chorus "He tries and he tries but he can't understand..." which makes it sound like a revisit of Outdoor Miner My favourite is closer "Live in Your Head" which is a lovely, expansive two chord thing. Great stuff...badger Radio 6 or yr fave station to play it and clog up the Newmans overloaded Inbox with requests to play live. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V10 #85 *******************************
