Be interested to know how they measure up to the 'Heads Roll' Fall who were quite a thunderous slab of wonderfulness.<< I really liked the last version of the Fall - enjoyed watching the rebuilding process over three or four years. I saw an early version of the "new Fall" in 2001 (around the time of Are you Are Missing Winner) and it was pretty dismal - MES looking in a right state, dragging microphone stands round the stage etc. AYAMW was a real "ground zero" album - couldn't have been further from the slick previous version of the band (which made The Unutterable). The band got better and better - I saw them a couple of times in 05/06 and they had a real power to them. And it was a 'proper' Fall, manned by scrutty blokes from Salford. By contrast, the new version seemed to work straight out of the box. I guess this shows how the profile of the band has changed in recent times - whereas MES previously had to find untrained local musicians in Manchester and train them to be The Fall, now he can find experienced musicians who are innately aware of what being The Fall entails. Yes, they are a bit 'rock', probably because the Americans in the band have played together and have probably played billions of bar-room gigs over the years. Then again, the Hammy Palais line-up (one drummer, two guitars, two basses, The Wife on keyboards) is bound to create quite a noise - the two-bass effect especially. The English bassist (Dave 'The Eagle' Spurr) is the real secret weapon here - - a really dominant, clanging noise, whereas the beardy American bassist adds a much deeper bass sound, often playing chords on the bass. The previous band was powerful, but this is a real assault. MES is having fun on the new album - which doesn't always make for the best vocals. But Reformation is a mighty track - the equal of Blindness, and with a bassline featuring one fewer note (two instead of three). I guess we'll have this line-up for a while yet - it must be convenient from the point of US touring to have three Americans at your disposal - so no need for visas, work permits etc. Then again, they could be sacked tomorrow. Wonder who'll be in the next version of the Fall. Germans? Jamaicans? Well I've decided to and see them at Jillys in Manchester on Monday night so I can see for myself. Heard a tape of one of the recent gigs which sounded really good and The Fall these days do tend to be something best heard live so I'm looking forward to it. I like the two bass concept as well although I'm not sure holding a bass at this angle is in keeping with the spirit of The Fall: http://static.flickr.com/111/275433274_e14073d347.jpg ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Apr 2007 17:44:28 -0700 (PDT) From: Ari Subject: [idealcopy] O.T: Very O.T but...... ..........may be of interest to some.....
