Nice email from Martin Moscrop the day after to say he liked both sets of photos too.. > > Was the gig any good then? ((( It was quite enjoyable, though in a generalised kind of way, if that makes any sense - I thought the new material was fairly generic, slight touches of Shriekback in places, but little or nothing of the elements that made them special back in the day, like the layered percussion, brass and tapes. The only percussion, apart from a few cowbells was a set of congas which were only used on the last number, "Si-Fermir-Ogrido", a track which appeared on an early Touch cassette compilation from 1983, "Meridians 2", which was a real crowd pleaser, and the only apparent evidence that they were enjoying themselves, with Moscrop & Johnson swapping spots back and forth on drums and percussion, as you can see in the photos. They seemd to be playing the 80s funk card quite specifically with their choice of pre-set material on the PA, which included stuff I hadn't heard in many a long year, like "Mind Your Own Business" by Delta 5, and "Stretch" by Maximum Joy - two particular old favourites of mine. I think they could have "gone for it" a bit more like they did on the last number, but the playing seemed quite restrained, and they had a rather unengaging stage presence - they felt a little wrapped up in their own world (a feeling borne out by a report from a friend in the support act who said ACR didn't want to share the dressing room with them - they wanted to "prepare" for the gig - so my friends band had to store their gear in the toilet, pretty crap when you think about it..) They kicked off the set with Waterline, but it didn't quite have the weight and force of the original (being stripped of percussion didn't help either). They played a few of the very early numbers, but only one (Rialto) from Sextet, which I regard as their high watermark, so that was a bit disappointing. Jez Kerr seems to be one of these people who never puts on weight (the lucky bastard!), maybe he has an overactive thyroid, but, as you can see from the photos, he's quite sinewy now, with a countenance that has strong echoes of another bass player - Norman Watt-Roy ! I must admit it took me a few songs to recognise Martin Moscrop, as I hadn't actually seen any photos of him since the ones I took in 1982... it was as though someone simply removed his hair.. and added a few pounds.. Whatever became of Topping, Terel & Tilson ? The acid test really is - would I go see them again ? Not so sure... let's just say I'm glad I was on the guestlist.. I loved Ashes at tht etime, but only managed to get a copy of Space Flower a couple of years back and I've got to say that it's a real gem. Much better than I was expecting to be honest after not getting a release here, and Simpson seeming rather indifferent to it. I think I shall resist buying the first three albums, yet again! Getting the posteverything thing did make me pop Pink Flag and the second Roxy live set on the CD player. It was the first time I'd played that, since getting the box last year, and boy isn't it good? Sounds like there was a tiny audience but the band really go for it and most of the tracks sound almost) fully formed. Graham's bass lines are quite lively/jaunty in places - perhaps they were toned down later for atmospheric purposes... It's certainly better than many live albums we've all encountered, just released to milk fans dry. B ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V10 #46 *******************************
