Dutch punk/jazz/ethnic/improv/noise/ whatever-you're-having-yourself outfit The Ex played here last weekend and were absolutely outstanding... such passion in the playing - it's incredibly infectious. For men and women of 'a certain age', they sure belt out the tunes with merry abandon. A wreckless energy coupled with sharp focus. Kat, the drummer, plays with a very propulsive, articulated, African influenced style that really drives the whole show (great to see a woman in a powerful position). Terrie and Andy, the two guitarists, play heavily rhythmic, sometimes African styled circular phrases, at times just exploding, going in a head-to-head on stage, the one left handed the other right, forming a symmetry, a sonic swordfight. GW Sok, the vocalist, meanwhile rants like someone who simply will not take no for an answer. It could be 1979 again - but not in any kind of 'retro' way. Their's is an oppositional stance which is as relevant today as back then. They are punk at the most genuine, down-to-earth grassroots level. Punk is their way of life. Self management - self determination. Their approach, musically, has always been open-minded, having worked with cellists, double bass players and other jazz musicians and jazz orchestras, ethnic musicians, improvisation, starting in the late 70s with no musical 'ability' to speak of, but an intense passion, a need to engage an audience in a climate of social unrest. This was the kind of gig that makes me want to get out the kit and start drumming again. Inspiring. I didn't have the camera last time I saw them. I made up for it this time though... http://www.flickr.com/photos/55867717@N00/sets/ The were selling very reasonably priced CDs and DVDs afterwards (a mere 12 euros for the documentary DVD 'A Beautiful Frenzy'... highly recommended - 54 minute film and 90 minutes of gig footage) Fergus http://www.roomtemperature.org http://www.asullenrelapse.blogspot.com http://www.myspace.com/ferguskellyrecordings http://www.flickr.com/photos/55867717@N00/sets/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Feb 2007 11:53:13 +0100 From: "Mileta Okiljevic" Subject: [idealcopy] Re: idealcopy-digest V10 #22 > Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2007 20:50:54 EST > From: MarkBursa@aol.com > > I challenge the list to think of anything worse.... > > > > Mark > > ------------------------------ complete new Bloc Party album with Ligeti as influence:-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Feb 2007 09:41:28 -0600 From: "David McKenzie" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Re: idealcopy-digest V10 #22 IMHO that would be a move in a more listenable direction. In the style of The Killers, imitating Bruce Springsteen (but acoustic). The entire project would take 28 years to complete. And he'd come and play the entire thing in your house, the over-indulged tosser. At least Ade is supposed to be a comedy turn. The Killers' po-faced seriousness conferred a whole extra level of crapness. Seasick Steve deserves every CD sale he can get on the back of his performance. B ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V10 #23 *******************************
