I've first heard about loads of good stuff via IC (most recently the highly impressive Serena Maneesh, thanks Tim!) so in an attempt to repay the favour here is what I've particularly listened to in 06. The Beauty Pill http://www.myspace.com/beautypill Album 'The Unsustainable Lifestyle' & EP 'Cigarette Girl from the Future'. There's another EP which is no great shakes. A difficult band to describe because they do tracks in a range of styles, but I suppose 'intelligent guitar rock' sums it up reasonably. The lyrics are clever, usually in a good way. They sometimes cram words in so as to pull off a witty couplet at the expense of the music, but it's intelligent enough that it usually works for me. There's a line of descent from the band Smart Went Crazy, whose album 'Con Art' is another great piece of work (though their first album was not great). Psapp - The Only Thing I Ever Wanted http://www.myspace.com/psapp Surely everyone likes Psapp? Like the Penguin Cafe Orchestra with cats instead of penguins. And more singing. Joan as Policewoman - album 'Real Life' & eponymous EP http://www.myspace.com/joanaspolicewoman Closer to classic pop than I usually care to venture, but with just enough of a weird edge, plus excellent singing/writing & arrangements, to get me hooked. Very good live too. A memorable moment from the year came during her gig at the Southbank where, during a long rant against the Bush government, someone shouted out, 'Yes, but what can we *do*?' 'Can't we just kill them all? Where are all the left-wing assassins when you need them?' was her rejoinder. Regina Spektor - everything really. 'Soviet Kitsch' is maybe the best album. http://www.myspace.com/reginaspektor As if Peter Hammill and Kate Bush had a daughter & hired Bjork as her nanny. I mean this in a good way. Snow Borne Sorrow by Nine Horses (which is David Sylvian with a bit of help from his bro & Burnt Friedman). You'll already know if you like Sylvian, if you do then this is a goodie. Particularly the early tracks, it tails off towards the end. There's a weird balance of near-conventional pop with dark undertones in the album, like Burt Bacharach performing in a David Lynch film. Chiaroscuro by Arve Henriksen - top Scandinavian tooting. I guess Jon Hassell has to be a point of reference here. It's poised somewhere between jazz, classical and world music. Difficult to describe without lapsing into Nordic imagery... er... glacial.... no I don't think I'm going to succeed in pinning this down but it is an absolute masterpiece in my book. ER by Nils Petter Molvaer - see above, really, very good too though I think Henriksen just gets his nose in front by the finishing line. Secret Rhythms by Burnt Friedman & Jaki Liebezeit - rhythmic electronic stuff with that unmistakable Liebezeit drumming. One of the best Can things, post-Can. I'm sure there's more but my day-job calls so will leave it there for now. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Dec 2006 16:12:21 -0800 (PST) From: Jan Noorda Subject: [idealcopy] paradiso posters by martin kaye http://www.xs4all.nl/~boekglas/MartinKaye/ yes they are on it and honeymoon killers with minimal compact under the name honeymoon killers as well and lots of others jj __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
