Listening to 154 yesterday, when it came to A Mutual Friend, I was reminded. Various CDRs in my collection with Alistair's greetings scribbled on Post-its attached to the jewel cases remind me from time to time. The last one, of the 2005 Neubauten London concert, with the apology for being out of touch for a while.. "been off sick". Little did we know how ill he was. Here's to his memory. The Cope gig I caught earlier this year was vintage stuff. My gig of the year so far I reckon. His latest album has divided the Cope fans, mind. It's another by his metal band Brain Donor, entitled (rather poorly IMO) Drain'd Boner. Personally I prefer his 'proper' solo records, though admittedly the margin between the two can be blurred at times. The first BD LP certainly had its moments, mainly when it sounded like The Stooges (Get Off Your Pretty Face / She Saw Me Coming). The new one is less successful IMO, though some of the 'rawk' breed of fans that Cope seems to have picked in recent years appear to love it. Once again, it has its moments in a doomy early Sabbath kind of way, but when guitarist Doggen starts doing his wanky guitar bits, I have to admit it grates for me. One track I'm rather partial to is a four minute blast where the only words Cope sings are "Where Do We Take U" over and over. Despite the more rocky approach, there's something there that reminds me of the early Teardrops, though even here we get the odd bar of fretwankery. Unfortunately... But I've recently gone back to Julian's last solo album, Dark Orgasm, released late last year, and have to say I've enjoyed it much more than I did at the time. Once again, there's an Iggy influence, and perhaps more surprisingly, something of an Alice Cooper one, but it's a pretty good album. And the opening track, Zororoaster, is excellent.
