Christopher Lee is quite good for his role and the final sequence is priceless. I'll probably pass on the remake, as Nicholas Cage has been demoted lately to my "Good actor/actress who happens to star in movies that I never like" along with Meg Ryan and other such distinguished folk. Nothing against remakes (I even happen to think that the recent remake of The Hills Have Eyes is better than the original film.). I'm just not huge on what I've heard about the Wicker Man remake. Now, if you haven't seen The Descent, I highly recommend this as a good horror film. Even with the somewhat wussed-out U.S. ending for wussed-out U.S. audiences, this movie still packs a great punch and I'm thinking of seeing it again before it leaves the big screen. I just read Max Brooks - The Zombie Survival Guide in anticipation of his upcoming book, World War Z: An Oral History Of The Zombie War and I had just completed Books 1 and 2 of The Walking Dead comic series before that. Yes. Best to read World War Z now before Brad Pitt's production company, which has purchased the movie rights, makes a film of it. I saw it when it came out (in a double bill with the sublime Don't Look Now, against which, admittedly, few films can hold a candle) and I've seen it a couple of times since, on the grounds that I must be wrong as so many people like it. But I still think it's pure hokum and I suspect that people actually want it to be better than it is because at least the story tries something reasonably original. But for me it falls so short. It has become a sort of shorthand for British weirdness and is of course an influence on the weird folk movement on view at the Green Man Festival - Tunng especially are big fans and the recent compilation Strange Folk has a song from the soundtrack on it. But it's still basically a film in which most of the cast overacts and Britt Ekland is just unspeakable. You could surmise from the above that I won't be rushing to the remake. The Descent is a much better film, albeit one which loses its focus a little in the second half when the monsters appear. I assume the US ending is the UK false ending? The real UK ending is pleasurably bleak. Went right into my all time top 10 horror films :o) I've seen the UK ending, and I actually don't mind the US ending either, except for the last split second, which just lumps this edited ending in with all yer run-of-the-mill Hollywood "scary" endings. The overall scenario, for me, at the end is nearly the same with either ending...if you're the kind of person who thinks about (and questions) the meaning of all the imagery... which I am :o) Still, I am curious about The Wicker Man. But I may end up waiting for the dvd. I just spent "my allowance" on a Mets ticket for Friday night :o) - -paul c.d.
