Sorry for the tardy reply to those people who proffered advice:- Thanks for the pointers:- actually, in the intervening time, I've been trawling about looking at various bits of kit online, and the Edirol model Mark mentions was one of the units that caught my eye:- the fact, hitherto unknown to me , that they're a sub-brand of Roland is encouraging, as no piece of their kit has ever let me down. The M-audio equivalent also popped into the frame, too:- but reading reveiws of the Edirol model suggests a degree of robust construction lacking in their line ? It seems to do the sort of job I need it for, I should expect to pay between #300-#400, although the Alesis one that Erik Klaver mentions is worth a look, but I have to say my experiences Alesis gear, ie my Alesis MMT8 sequencer, and an Alesis PA amp that the local footy club used to use, is NOT greatly encouraging, from a reliability point of veiw. The sequencer wouldn't lock in sync with my 4-track due to it's flaky timecode generator (subsequently found to be a rather 'rounded-off' clock signal). The PA amp lasted all of 2 months before a pall of smoke issued from it and it ceased working, despite it's much-vaunted 'protection' circuitry. I reckon the Edirol 101 is a good call, myself:- I *did* however want to make sure it did what I thought it did, and 'sent' to separate sequencer tracks- As I said, with this kind of thing, expensive mistakes can be made. The M-Audio Interface and "Control surface***" pointed to by Andrew is out of my range, methinks.- it's certainly a desirable looking thing, but beyond my means, I'm afraid. The clue regarding the hefty price is that little box proclaiming it to be Pro-Tools compatable/integratable (?):- since this marque is the de facto industry standard, and falls into the realm of "I'm not paying for it, the record company is", the prices of even a simple bit of kit approaches stratospheric. An aquaintance of mine recently 'went digital' at his studio facility , using a Pro-Tools hardware/software system and the sums involved in setting it up would make your eyes water......... In the order of "a second mortgage, one arm, one leg and a sizeable chunk of the 'family jewels'......... " :-O So that's out for me, then . Since I've got the semi-permanent use of a Behringer 2442 desk with shedloads of channels, swept-mid EQ and 2 onboard stereo multi-FX, as you say, the Mix can be dealt with later. Getting the raw signal down on some sort of recording medium is THE thing to worry about. Thanks to those of you who offered me some advice, anyhow. Incidentally:- **** 'Control Surface', I ask ya:- they used to call them mixers when I was a lad ! The marketing dept. strikes again. Maybe the techno- name allows the maker to jack up the cost? ;-) OK, I know they do MIDI stuff and whatnot, but still... Pretentious? Moi? MarkBursa@aol.com wrote: Derek, you need an Edirol FA-101. About #300. There is a M-Audio equivalent, but the Edirol looks a bit more user-friendly. Not sure what version of Cubase it works with though - you may need an upgrade. But you probably don't need anything too elaborate. It's just an interface - no knobs & sliders. But AFAIK nobody does a 10-channel multitrack inteface with a built-in mixer. In any case it sounds like you need to get the band recorded and then worry about the mix later... Hope this helps Mark

Avid own both Digidesign and M-Audio, so it's mostly hype. That control surface is way out of my means too - I have a little 2 in / 4 out box, and I won't be upgrading any time soon, particularly given how much rent on my new flat's gonna be... I work entirely in software these days; keep meaning to work my guitar into tracks, but I'm hopeless at recording it. If I ever win the lottery, I'll book some studio time...
