(wait - where's the sound of flying respect? You really didn't have *any* for me? Darn....) but this is the only Pink Floyd album I really like. Weird, huh? I mean, sure, the stuff you hear on the radio is familiar, and I do own an SACD of D.S.O.T.M. in 5.1, and maybe Animals is under-rated, etc. but.... it's the Final Cut that I sometimes have to obsessively play. Not all the time.... it's just that there's nothing else in their canon exactly like it. It's a lot like the Waters solo material that followed it - a linear story instead of a collection of songs - but Gilmour keeps it from turning into an audible book by focusing on the music and performances. BTW - The Final Cut was recorded in "Holophonic" sound. If you listen on a pair of headphones - open air work the best - you'll hear the sounds in 3D. It's actually a pretty cool effect. I'd say start with The Final Cut. I never did listen to any of Roger's solo albums after that, but I know that the Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking and Radio KAOS are both story-cycles. allmusic.com rates Pros... pretty highly, but their pick is Amused To Death, which I think is a more traditional album. Good luck! ^_^ Cheers, Paul ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2006 08:20:09 -0700 From: fernando Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Imagine if... I echo this sentiment with regards to The Wall and Final Cut, and add that the Final Cut made me think less of The Wall at the time (being an impressionable teen in a english/English music ain't-cool-but- salsa-is-it place). Not sure that I would go further than Final Cut. In regards to Keith A's imagination gone ugly/contorted yet making sense, I understand the perplexity with Pink Floyd post-Syd making it (and NewOrder being a counter example to the proposed notion of futility). I think the difference for both groups is that, although praised to high-heaven, NewOrder had much to discover -- including how to play and write songs -- while PF was already on its merry way into a steady state of songs/performance glossed with production. Although I like some of the material post-Syd, there is a sameness of sound after Meddle (for instance) that did not happen to NewOrder until... hmmm, Republic? So, NewOrder had many more "places" to go than PF after their respective leaders left, which I think, lends credence to their success. I still fail to see the grandiosity of Dark Side, except to the untrained ears finding PF at the time and not knowing about the good stuff. Had Syd left after The Wall-equivalent, then I think that Keith's comparison to T-Rex could be more apt. Wait, that is what happened to that thing called PF after Waters left, didn't it? cheers! - -fernando On Jul 19, 2006, at 2:57 PM, P J Kane wrote: > << he responded by presenting me yesterday with copies of the final > cut and 3 waters solo albums plus the "when the wind blows" > soundtrack. good grief , this is a daunting prospect. does anyone > hear actually rate waters or have i just taken posession of about 4 > hours of whinging tune-free 80's prog? i really ought to play this > stuff , but , y'know , life is short....... >> > > i myself am no big fan of "The Wall". i mean, it's okay i guess, but > not the 'greatest thing ever'(tm), as so many of it's fans seem to > believe. > > that said, i have a fondness for "The Final Cut". it's a subtle > album, with some sounds that were way ahead of their time, at least > when i first heard it back in 1982 in suburban Atlanta... i think > it's worth a listen at least. i still put it on occasionally, to > this day. > > i could never get into the solo Waters stuff though.... > > PJK > > please don't hate me because i can't type..... > --- > All the cool kids are doing it: > HTTP://www.EvilSponge.org ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2006 18:44:45 +0000 From: "Jason Rogers" Subject: [idealcopy] O.T.?: Goth box set due from Rhino Records Not bad...this covers most of the bases: From Billboard: 'Gothic Box' Shines Light On Ultra Dark Music July 18, 2006, 11:25 AM ET Rhino has rounded up the top names in goth rock for the four-disc boxed set "A Life Less Lived -- The Gothic Box," due Sept. 19. As I may have said here before I had the misfortune of having to sit through the whole of The Wall a few years back played by a Floyd tribute band (because a friend's brother played in it) and it was a gruesome experience - not because of the performance (the band were rather good) but because it's two hours of dull music topped by moaning lyrics, like being collared by the worse kind of pub bore. I've never heard Final Cut - couldn't face anything else after The Wall. I think post-Syd Floyd are most interesting from a sociological perspective due to their world-wide fame. They are a very English band with English preoccupations but somehow this translates to a world audience, who can't just be entranced by the mega stage shows. I think Meddle stand up really well, but wouldn't go back to anything else post-Syd any longer. The thought of listening to that Hitch-Hiker's album makes my blood run cold.
