I was actually hoping something like this might happen. I even managed to avoid watching ANY game this world cup. Football bores me and there are countless of other things which are far better to waste my time on. Also I hate those big media events. I always try, when there's an event the whole world presumably watches, to find something else to do, a ridiculous (and futile) attempt to remain outside the machine. I ended up sitting in what was probably the only cafe in Tel Aviv without a plasma screen. I had a good meal and quietly finished reading Geoff Ryman's Air (brilliant). If I were a professional player, with lots of experience including more than one world cup, if I were intelligent enough to know that this is a trap and a provocation, I would do nothing. I think a really great player should be also judged by these criteria Not only is it a matter of ethics and non-violence, it is also the way in chich you handle the psychological aspects of playing in the world cup final. Zidane just couldn't handle the pressure and resorted to a kintergarden=hooligan approach ("hit first, think later"). Anyone heard about professionalism? He certainly got what he asked for. God, I don't believe I actually participate in a debate about football... giluz On 7/11/06, Ari wrote: > > agreed violence on the field is disturbing, but what > would you do if (like Zidane) you were given a barrage > of insult about your mother, kiss and make up? And "unlistenable" and "shite" do not belong in a sentence about Gogol Bordello. See. We're sucking you in slowly! Anyone else wish Zidane had picked up the trophy as he walked past it after getting send off? What would they be able to do - ban him? ; ) But whilst you're right - it wasn't a clever thing to do - he has created the most memorable moment in the tournament, the moment that will be remembered long after everyone has forgotten who took the winning penalty. Admittedly I say this with my Malcolm McLaren head on, rather than my John Motson one!
