I know everyone hates Primal Scream, and yes Bobby G (I can't believe anyone calls themself that in 2006, but there you go!) is a chancer, but I like 'em. Less keen on their Stones wannabe stuff, but enjoyed the 2nd number where the female singer started shouting. Probably won't buy the album, but I think I'd enjoy them live. Liked Jose Gonzalez guitar sound. Very nice, if less keen on his voice Ray Davies needs a good slap. I want to hear him sing Sunny Afternoon, not the audience. What is this? The Good Old Days? But best of all for me was The Young Knives, who I've had a soft spot for since they had that ridiculous single / video out last year that went "If all else fails, I'll be the Prince of Wales!". Now I know there's something borderline novelty about them - they look like something out of The Fast Show for god's sake! - but they've got something. Really liked the first number. Made me laugh, and yet I really liked their energy. There was, dare I say it, a little bit of Wire in there? Sort of got the feeling that except for the refrain, many of the audience didn't know many of the words. A bit embarrasing really. I was trying to figure out the influences on Young Knives; I've not heard them before. Maybe a bit of Wire, tiny bit of XTC? I actually thought one of them looked like a bespectacled version of the plump guy of Peepshow - to continue the comedy theme. Completely agree on Jose Gonzales. The only drawback is that it's in a special section called "Listen To This" that's not necessarily included in every issue - I asked for it to be added to my subscription. (It is free, though. ^_^) Anyway - here's the blurb from page 13 of the Listen To This section: CDs (Nice picture of Chairs Missing's cover) Wire Education An influence on bands like Elastica and Sonic Youth, Wire continue to define minimalist art rock with their first three albums: Pink Flag (1977), Chairs Missing (1978), and 154 (1979). The British quartet's trademark rapid-fire masterpieces like "Mr Suit" and "Field Day for the Sundays" hold up extremely well nearly three decades later - and if you don't already own the albums they're on, they're definitely worth the cash... even if bonus tracks are glaringly absent from these reissues.
