Bullshit,
The Emporer has no clothes.
while I enjoy the right-hand turn into the experimental ditch that Scott  
Walker has taken, he's no saintly risk taker either - he's been pandering to the  
4AD  / Wire magazine crowd while alos knowing he'll get Mojo press, only  
he's been pandering to the art crowd at a slower clip and over a  very long 
period of time - Rick Rubin takes as much of a risk with doing  what he does to 
someone that once had something special and lost the plot ala a  Neil Diamond 
with his newest album.
What Rubin did with Johnny Cash - now THAT was a real risk   - and these days 
Cash is as ubiquitous with the kids as Britney  Spears was in the late '90s.
I have to say, it's far far easier and safer to go experimental and "out  
there" than it is to craft something that bridges the melodic and the  
experimental as in Wire's 154.
 
Walker is no Eno, David Bowie, or even David Byrne for that matter - these  
people have been risk takers at moments that made an impact.
 
and the Arctic Monkeys really really suck IMHO - dated drivel - shows a bit  
of an out of touch taste for Scott to praise them I think.

Interesting article, Keith.  Doesn't seem that his new opus "Drift"is going to be filed under 'Easy Listening', though.
   
  The thing that *really* caught my eye however ***  was the mention of Scott doing Jaques Brel's song "My Death" on the Billy Cotton Bandshow in the 60's.  You couldn't make it up........
  Were you to try & dream up a situation that defines the word 'incongruous' I think we'd have a winner..........I'd *really* like to watch a video of THAT appearance  !
   
  (for the benefit of the younger /non-UK members of the congregation, BIlly Cotton was an avuncular old stick who must've been approaching his 80's (if not actually IN them) who presented for years a 'light entertainment' show both on TV and radio in the 50's & 60's if not longer, who's forte was opening a show by bellowing "Wakey wakey" at the top of his lungs, then conducting a big showband/light orchestra through goodnaturedly raucous singalong versions of stuff like "Roll out the Barrel", "Down at the old Bull and Bush" and other toons beloved of that generation who spent some part of their formative years either down in tube-stations whilst Hermann Goerings boys rained explosives down on them, or in cinemas watching newsreels of same. )
   
   
  ***(I'm also intrigued by the pair of  German 'performance artistes' mentioned in the piece,  who rejoice in the name The Fuckheads, who's act apparently features them ramming the end of a clothes line up  their backsides then hanging clothes on it:- I could probably live without the vid of that, though)
