If the physical discomfort weren't enough, it's a quite fantastically challenging piece of text to recite even without those restrictions. I was fortunate enough to see it performed in London not very long ago: truly mesmerising, even by Beckett's standards. ((( Beckett, whilst rehearsing Not I with Whitelaw, never indicated his reaction to her performance, but after it was filmed simply said "Miraculous !" Whitelaw's never forgotten that. My only reservation about it, really, is that the staging sometimes distracts people from the writing; it's often dismissed as meaningless gabbling, whereas my experience is that it reveals fresh angles, nuances and details every time. ((( Very much depends on who is performing it. Whitelaw is/was, of course, the undisputed queen, and a favourite of Beckett. But I'd agree with you about fresh nuances with each new performance. For anyone who's partial, there's some splendid stuff going on at the Barbican right now: http://www.barbican.org.uk/beckett. I'd particularly recommend the prose and poetry readings; a real treasure trove. Reviews are on my blog: http://circlewagons.blogspot.com/ ((( I enjoyed your reviews - nice one. Someone may have recognised this already but the three-layered thing is the venerable old Fry's 'Triple bar':- as Mark says, it wasn't a big seller, and often shops didn't stock it, but for some reason was often among the half-dozen varieties stocked by vending machines on railway stations etc. and handily for a much younger me, the public pool where I used to swim. So now I can't think of Triple bars without 'smelling' the pungent aroma of chlorinated water in some sort of odd synaethsesia..... I'll get me towel...........;-) Derek MarkBursa@aol.com wrote: dan, still bereft (as i wrote, i believe, yesterday to mr bursa, inadvertantly off-list) 30-plus years after the fact over the disappearance of a fondly remembered candy bar from either hershey or nestle that consisted of layers of milk, dark & i think white chocolate ... guaranteed to rot a tooth at 50 paces I do vaguely recall something like that being sold here - but certainly it wasn't a popular brand. Always been partial to plain chocolate rather than milk - the arrival of the dark chocolatre Kit-Kat has been a most welcome addition to the world of confectionery.
