As if to dampen the lifting of spirits afforded by Wire getting their due respect in the NME, there is this lamentable announcement.......... There is pointless, there is *utterly, utterly* pointless, then there is this 'ersatz' reformation of a band that is in no way sorely missed.......leaving aside the question of whether a band is *still* a band with one of their dual frontmen deceased, and the other one (and chief writer IIRC) wisely giving it a wide berth, I have to conclude that the strain of financing his idyllic Hawiian menage has emptied Todd's coffers, and he needs funds. Either that , or the sulphurous fumes belching out of Kilauea's lava flows have finally rotted the guy's brain.......I despair of watching a once inventive artiste not merely scraping the bottom of the barrel, but having long gone through the base of said vessel, is continuing to dig towards the earth's core at a rate of knots........ :-( Bad gig by TR last year was it, then Keith ? Well it wasn't my cup of tea, Derek! My mate who's a Todd fan thought it was great, but then he likes Meatloaf, though on the other hand, he also likes Magazine! I thought it was bollocks, as did my other mate there. I've just dug out the review I did and this paragraph just about sums it up... High points, if you can call them that, were probably a ukulele number and a Beatles' cover (You've Got To Hide Your Love Away). Otherwise, the show consisted of some HORRIBLE rawk thing (Black & White?) on the acoustic, Todd over-doing the vocals (forced, affected, show-offy, etc), when at times he showed he could still sing in that sweet voice of his, and a throwaway, almost flippant, version of the pop masterpiece that is I Saw The Light. full version here... http://www.evilsponge.org/concert/RundgrenTodd__9Jun05.htm K. np Ty Rex - A Whole Zinc of Finches ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V9 #77 ******************************
