In fact, here is his four-out-of-five stars review. Bruno (PS for those interested still don't know about the job/voluntary redundancy and won't find out until later this week!) Cool Cale goes back to basics John Cale: Carling Academy Bristol IN just over a year John Cale will be able to claim his old age pension, but you wouldn't know it. Looking fantastic with his cool haircut, jeans and trainers, and on the back of last year's blackAcetate album, one of his best and most accessible, Cale was in great form. The new record is a back to basics rock album and that approach was reflected here: no fancy lightshow or backdrop, just Cale and his talented three-piece band. So great was Cale's impact on music as a member of the Velvet Underground - not to mention as the producer of acts as diverse as Patti Smith, the Happy Mondays and the Mediaeval Baebes - that everything he does, whether it be classical, avant-garde or rock, will inevitably be compared to it. Fortunately, he wasn't afraid to revisit the Velvets with a version of Femme Fatale backed by gently bubbling electronics and with a vocal reminiscent of Tom Waits. There was plenty of new material in the two-hour set, with the likes of Perfect, Outta The Bag and Turn The Light On - all poppy enough to get on the radio - beefed up with hard-edged guitars which were a million miles from the frenetic viola abuse that made Cale famous. Of the older songs, Helen of Troy and Things were stylish rockers and Set Me Free, with Cale on acoustic guitar, was beautiful. There were also covers of Jonathan Richman's Pablo Picasso and a stunning Walkin' The Dog, the old Rufus Thomas number, all proving that Cale remains the coolest living Welshman. ********************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. I didn't see Cale on his recent tour, but I would, however, like to take umbrage with the last part of that sentence. ; ) Keith PS Hope the job situation goes ok, Bruno. np The Delfonics - definitive collection ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2006 01:57:31 +0000 From: Tim Subject: Re: [idealcopy] ot: was fisherspooners - Cale = Dire Straits Keith A wrote: >>There were also covers of Jonathan Richman's Pablo Picasso and a stunning >>Walkin' The Dog, the old Rufus Thomas number, all proving that Cale > > remains > >>the coolest living Welshman. > > > I didn't see Cale on his recent tour, but I would, however, like to take > umbrage with the last part of that sentence. ; ) > Is Keith Astbury the coolest living welshman?! ;) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2006 02:07:43 +0000 From: Tim Subject: Re: [idealcopy] and indestructable Tim wrote.......... Yes I am THAT narrow minded I don't want to hear Alabama 3s Acoustic stuff, or indeed anyones preferably. Alas I've only heard this second hand on the box sets. You can hear the energy though, they must have be quite astonishing. Just didn't match up to what I saw last time...and when he tries to 'Rock' Cale shows he is a bit stuck in 1987. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2006 07:21:48 +0000 (GMT) From: Monochromatic Man Subject: [idealcopy] OT: disturbing http://www.johnlydon.com/jlhome.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2006 09:53:04 +0200 From: giluz Subject: Re: [idealcopy] and indestructable Tim wrote.......... I saw them twice during that period in Nottingham & Peterborough. Very punkish & full of energy.Even then Partridge was ascerbic with the crowd - bullying them & mocking them for half hearted applause at new numbers. Would be something to see areunion. Chris NP - Arctic Monkeys CD On first listen I quite like it.Very immediate - full of angst & energy. Not ground breaking but the lyrics are a real treat on some tracks.Worth the listen. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V9 #30 ******************************
