They'd have been bigger if they hadn't stopped touring. Plus they never were 'cool' as such, as all the Top 100 have been at some point. Not all bad. Its pleasing that the 12 year old editor of NME (have you seen him?!) knows who Wire are. The inclusion of Kate Bush, Eno, The Fall, Happy Mondays, Spacemen 3, The Bunnymen, Human League, Super Furry Animals 'Radiator' shows some taste. Note how former NMEs darlings the Manics only scrape a no.37. And Who the fuck is Patrick Wolf though? (99th best british LP ever apparently) I hope the exclusion of My Bloody Valentine is due to their being 50pc an Irish band. As for the Artic Monkeys....clearly a wet dream for the NME. Its the Libertines, but without the bad drugs, a bit of Jarvis-Cocker Northern kitchen sink drama, and a touch of that Glastonbury/Stadium friendly Oasis vibe. But its a shame they contribute absolutely nothing to the development of popular music, peddling a terribly conservative vaguely Brit-punky/Buzzcocks/Smiths-esque thrash that is slightly less annoying than The Strokes and the musical brain-tumour that is Pete Doherty. Not entirely shit, and I'm sure they 'mean well; etc etc but...Call that progress? I thought much the same of 'The Stone Roses'..it didn't exactly move things forward did it? The exact opposite in fact...(hence the no.3 LP in the list) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Jan 2006 02:04:12 +0000 From: Tim Subject: Re: [idealcopy] and indestructable Tim wrote.......... As for the 'np', I made the mistake of going to see John Cale last Tuesday...as did Mr Rowland. Graeme collared me on his way to the bar to point out that Cale's new stuff sounded like Dire Straits...and indeed he was right! The last time I saw Cale it was one of the best gigs I've ever seen, but this one was one of the worst. His band were rather keen on wanky guitar solos that would not sound out of place at a Lenny Kravitz gig and did indeed make most of the material from (the not bad) Black Acetate sound like Dire Straits or perhaps ZZ Top. And he murdered 'Femme Fatale' with a dreadfully naff 'update' with horrible 90s synths all over it. It was shit. I take back everything I have ever said about John Cale. If he's in town on is current tour..go and see a new exciting band instead. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Jan 2006 21:31:53 -0600 From: David McKenzie Subject: Re: [idealcopy] ot: was fisherspooners - Cale = Dire Straits > As for the 'np', I made the mistake of going to see John Cale last > Tuesday...as did Mr Rowland. I have seen Cale twice Once in Sabotage mode and once in Rainy season mode amongst the most brilliant shows ever I rather liked Blace Acetate so far, though it has not grabbed me back for many listns I will now attembt to discern any Knopflerisms. Mind you, there are a handfull of Dire Straights songs I appreciate, but cannot imagine enjoying Cale anywhere near them. Speaking of 90s synth - anyone else loving Ula - Just an Engine?
