Back in the day, never thought I'd see a time when tapes would become so utterly, hopelessly obsolete. I used mostly TDK and Maxell (which had a very particular smell !:) Apart from all the taped LPs and comps that built up over the years (shelves full of 'em, all with handmade cover artwork - some with handcrafted labels on the cassettes themselves), there's drawers full of tapes of my own sonic explorations from about 84 - 97 (when I got my first computer). I recently listened to some field recordings for the first time in many many years that I made in London in the summer of 86.. bloody hell, that really took me back.. an art student adrift in a rather anonymous city, serving beer to disgruntled punters in Battersea. There was no summer work in Dublin at that time. We were haemorraging population to the US and elsewhere - "The Brain Drain " as it was known: graduates taking their qualifications out of the country. Em.... where was I ? Oh yeah cassettes... memory banks... One tape not in that archive was the BASF soundhog... with its very particular opaque blue box... anyone remember those ? Fergus ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Jan 2006 08:11:26 EST From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Memory banks >>One tape not in that archive was the BASF soundhog... with its very particular opaque blue box... anyone remember those ?<< Oh yes... quite heavily marketed at the time, via a little "soundhog" character IIRC. This resembled some form of rodent (I guess a groundhog) with a large, trumpet-shaped nose (from which eminated varoous sounds). I think it had wheels too, for no apparent reason, which would make it a distant relative of the contemporary armadillo-tank hybrid on the cover of Emerson Lake & Palmer's Tarkus. The Soundhog in retrospect was probably more like the fruits of a union between a rat and the Direct Line mobile telephone. Playing the flugelhorn. Come to think of it, I might be getting confused with the Dunlop Groundhog character, which advertised tyres and was like a rodent Formula 1 car. Soundhogs were rubbish tapes too, but they weren't BASF. Think they were EMI. Mind you, BASF tapes were rubbish too - nowhere near as good as Maxell or TDK. A clueless government minister and his dept in a world of 'spin' spiralling out of control with hilarious consequences. The minister is played by Chris Langam, last seen on the excellent series Help ! with Paul Whitehouse (Langam was psychiatrist to Whitehouse's 10 or 12 different patients). Langam's character muddles through things with a constantly beleaguered, bewildered, and occassionally bemused air, bobbed about by his advisors, not unlike a sort of latter-day Paul Eddington (Yes Minister), with an ever-so-slight Jeremy Irons overlay. The director of communications character is a foul-mouthed Scot who nearly has me falling off the chair sometimes. His whole manner is pretty brutally frank and to the point. A very well written show, really tight, never lets up, pacing's excellent, situations seem to have gotten as bad as they possibly can, only to get considerably worse.. The press for the show calls it the new Office, which is very misguided to say the least, as this show is 100 times better. It's a completely different type of show anyway. Given the popularity of The Office, I realise I might not exactly make myself popular by saying that I never really liked it. I found it really flat. I think Ricky Gervais is a comedian of very limited range. I think the likes of Steve Coogan do the comedy of embarrassment much better. Check it out - The Thick Of It. BBC2 9pm Mondays. Let me say from the off , I am NOT knowledgable about jazz, and it's one of my least favourite musical genres: nevertheless, I *did* really enjoy Ken Burns's "Jazz" series, broadcast here a couple of years back:- it managed to engage me even though I wasn't a Jazz buff, the music's history and development was presented in an engaging way. >>I wasn't aware of Wynton Marsalis's central role in it's production, but my my, you certainly *do* seem to have a bit of a down on him, there , Ari :- I don't know a right lot about the guy, but I find the assertion that "Improvisation has no place in Jazz" astonishing:- I thought that at least 95% of all jazz WAS improvisation !!?<< The 'main' reason I don't like Wynton is because he has made several anti-semetic remarks.he's too 'full of himself', I know someone that knows him and they concur he's quite seld-centered. with the exception of I retain a certain fondness for the earlier stuff exemplified by Louis Armstrong and his ilk, up to and including the swing era, by dint of my late Dad's collection of old 78s. To further raise Ari's blood pressure [ ;-) ] , to these ears, so much that has masqueraded as "jazz" during my lifetime has been self-indulgent noodling without any discernable heart, and is merely a vehicle for various Musos (note capital) to hold up there virtuosity for the delectation and reverence of the proles, and is broadly analagous to these 'rawk' guitarists like Vai , Malmsteen and their ilk who widdle away at 360 bpm fret-melting as they go, and that godawful Jazz fusion stuff was it's very nadir (Return to Forever, Weather Report, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Stanley Clarke etc etc........ non of which is my cup of tea: AT ALL in fact most of it wouldn't get into my jazz collection if the guys paid me....
