D&E was one of the first Wire records I bought. ('Our Swimmer' was the first single), so its the era I hold quite dear. I'd say D&E holds the definitive version of 'We Meet Under Tables' - was always a favourite that song and can't tell you how disappointed I was on hearing Colin's version on 'Not To' - its good in its own way, but the propulsive force of the D&E version is absent. Other highpoints for me have been 'Revealing Trade Secrets','Go Ahead', 'Ally In Exile'. The sound quality is an issue, but I tend to be more forgiving of such things if the music has the vital spark. I've welcomed the 'historical artefact' releases over the years (e.g. Crazy About Love 12", Turns and Strokes, Behind The Curtain, Coatings) even if in some cases they have only been played a few times. And yes, I've put together a compilation tape many years ago of the tracks from 'A-Z', 'Dome', 'Dome 2', 'Not To' that have the tracks that notionally would have made Wire MkI's fourth long player - it is fun. I like the idea of a reconvening of Wire to record such a record now. Who knows, its not such a fanciful thought; if you believe Ralf H|tter's words, Kraftwerk's 'Tour De France Soundtracks' was begun before 1983 but it took until 2003 for it to see a re-recording and the light of day. Brian Wilson and 'Smile' too perhaps? Yes. Not got the re-issued one (with bonus tracks I believe), it was a cd i played a lot at the time. I'd not heard it in a long time though, and it's probably fair to say that some works better than others, but it's an interesting release. They were great when I saw them a year or so ago. Loved the way Robert Lloyd kept checking the time, and then during the last number walked off stage, and walked straight through the crowd to the bar. The band were still finishing and there was Lloyd supping away!! Can I recommend their Pigs On Purpose and In The Good Old Country Way albums if you haven't already got them. Never bought Hsyterics so can't comment on that, but the other two are really good. D&E might be hard going compared to 154 or CM - but it's hardly classified as "difficult" in the scheme of things. D&E is an extraordinary record - think of it as a demo for the fourth Wire album, released in late 1980. You can have great fun putting together an Ideal track list for Wire's great lost album, using the stuff off D&E and Turns & Strokes. And a nice little fantasy sees Wire completing the task, making a "finished" version of the 1980 album.... ((( With you all the way on this Mark.. Despite the ropey sound, D&E is a very valuable document, thoroughly enoyable, if somewhat patchy in parts, and by no means 'gloomy' or 'depressing'. I've always wondered what studio versions of these songs (& others that ended up on Not To) would have sounded like on a 4th Wire Mk 1 LP. Before samplers, sequencers and all that lark started to change the landscape. On the subject of gig gabbers... one of my abiding memories of my first time to see Wire (which will be 20 years ago this June.. bloody hell where does the time go to..),at The Clarendon Hotel in Hammersmith (Mark also in attendance), a right bunch of fucking gobshites right in front of me, with their backs to Wire, spoke quite loudly at various points during the gig, and, at one point, when Come Back In Two Halves started but fell apart, they had the gall to say "Play some facking mue-zik..." I'll play you some music mate.. using your facking GUTS for violin strings !! It really felt like a big declaration that "We have no interest in what we're doing!" Ironically, given the view of it on this list, Manscape is what got me back into Wire because of how jarring and weird it sounded! And interestingly, the recent postings here are actually making me want to give D&E another day in court, as I've not listened to it since the early '80's! Wire's headline show was a year earlier - both gigs have oddly similar dates - - 24/6/86 and 24/7/87. Can't remember who was support for Wire - possibly Fini Tribe? Or some form of Russell Mills enterprise? Totally agree re the Clarendon (for listers unfamiliar with this venue, it was an old, fading, once grand hotel/pub that was stranded in the middle of a large roundabout. Gigs were upstairs. It was demolished in about 1990 to make way for a bus station). Saw several gigs there around 86-87 - The Fall (supported by Happy Mondays) and Felt (suppported by Blue Aeroplanes) come to mind...
