It is, of course, #2 in his proposed 50 recordings covering each US State which in itself is a barmy proposition - quite apart from the effort involved who would want to tie themselves down for years in this way as a recording artist? But on this evidence it's a liberating concept if anything. Stevens looks at the state from all angles lyrically, employing a range of instruments and musical styles to create a melange which I suspect will take months to plumb and will require some research on Illinois to understand. Stand out tracks at this stage - and there are three which are among the best things I've heard all year - are 'The Man of Metroplis Steals Our Hearts' which has the air of Keith West's 'Excerpt from a Teenage Opera' (a song I've always liked), 'Chicago', built around a great refrain of "all things go, all things go" born on a swinging violin motif with choral and trumpet accompaniment and the stunning 'John Wayne Gacy Jr' about the serial killer, sung in a style reminiscent of Paul Simon, all acoustic guitar and piano and soft annunciation. Check out some lyrics: "Look underneath the house there Find the few living things Rotting fast in their sleep, oh the dead Twenty-seven people, even more They were boys with their cars, summer jobs Oh my God Are you one of them?" The use of the phrase 'summer jobs' followed by an anguishly expressed, extended, 'Oh my God' gets me every time. This song was given away on a couple of free magazine CDs in the UK. So, an excellent album but coming in too late in the year to quite capture top honours: 1 Funeral - The Arcade Fire 2 Come On Feel the Illinoise - Sufjan Stevens 3 Aerial - Kate Bush 4 Takk - Sigur Ros 5 The Black Hole - Misty's Big Adventure 6 City and Eastern Songs - Jeffrey and Jack Lewis 7 Clap Your Hands Say Yeah 8 No Earthly Man - Alasdair Roberts 9 KC Rules OK - King Creosote 10 Present - Van der Graaf Generator With honourable mentions to Art Brut, Arab Strap, Gorillaz and Gravenhurst. That's' a pretty reasonable top ten I think - a couple of stand out first albums (Arcade Fire, Clap Your Hands), some artists hitting their stride after a few releases (Stevens, Creosote), some artists building on great past work (Sigus Ros, Misty's, Jeff and Alasdair) and a couple of welcome returns (Kate and VdGG). From previous years, I fell in love again with the first Hatfield and the North album after decades of neglect and was bowled over by 'Musik von Harmonia'. I'm so disassociated now from what is released as singles that I can't say with any authority what did or didn't come out, but I was very taken with Arctic Monkeys 'Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor' after a few hearings. Filmwise, the shamefully neglected 'Heimat 3' did it for me, as its two predecessors had - the Heimat films are one of the crowning achievements of cinema. 'Sideways' was great too and three films from the London Film Festival should be looked out for: 'The Death of Mr Lazarescu', 'L'Enfant' and 'Hidden'. None of these three are a bundle of laughs, however - for this I'd recommend the barmy 'kung Fu Hustle'. On TV, Doctor Who was a truly great experience, and 'Life in the Undergrowth' made one wonder again what one will do without David Attenborough. Otherwise it was HBO straight down the line again: 'Deadwood', 'Six feet Under' and 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' and I didn't even get to see 'The Wire' and 'The Sopranos'. No round-up of the year should ignore the astonishing Ashes series, the crowning sporting event of my lifetime. At times this summer cricket seemed to justify why evolution had happened. I wonder if this was a unconscious influence? Happy new year all.
