Possibly more interesting for the Barrett fan is that, according to the Floyd site, Brain Damage, a tape has surfaced of Syd joining in with the Last-Minute-Put-Together-Boogie-Band at a gig in '72 featuring Hawkwind and Pink Fairies. (I don't have the link but find the site and scroll down the news section if you're interested.) Apparently he joins in for a jam and a number of blues tracks at the end of the band's set. He's onstage for about 29 mins. It seems the Barrett family would be happy with its release and this is being considered at present. Could be dire but fascinating nonetheless. Hi Ari, I was reviewing my sent email, cos I know I tend to be a bit 'did I just think of typing it, or did I type it'. I found I didn't include a web address on that last mail. http://www.craufurdland.co.uk is the place we took Al to. A beautiful, wild area of Ayrshire countryside. On a clear day, you can see the island of Arran from the little hill where the burial site is, a magical place that Al loved. An island of eerie glens, and ancient standing stones. Tired of spam? It's a classic - Flaherty was an explorer/filmmaker and was the first to realise a documentary film (it wasn't called like that, it was before Grearson) should have a narrative and not just be comprised of pieces of 'reality' edited together (that was on his first film 'nanook of the north'). Man of Aran is basically about tthe hard life of a family on the island - it's more fiction than documentary, as far as I remember, but has an eerie beautiful atmosphere and some amazing scenes. A return after 27 years that was startling not only for its unexpectedness but for its constant greatness. In seven performances they were different every time even although the set changed only slightly. As performers they are each extraordinary but never seek to use that for anything other than the band's needs. Like Wire, songs mutated before your ears, especially during Lemmings which in its mid section took on a different shape each time. The songs are so much part of me that it's like seeing bits of my insides on display - Man Erg is now the live apex for me, a monument to Hammill's genius (a phrase I've shied away from using before but on the evidence of this year is fully justified) and the band's skill. The top seven performances of the year, no contest. Gang of Four - another great, unexpected return. As if I'd blinked my eye and 25 years had gone away. Andy Gill's guitar conjured up physical shards in the mind's eye. Jon King's energy was incredible to see, the rhythm section was subtle and driven. And the songs leapt through the years and grabbed you by the throat and hips. The set was virtually all highs and revealed all their new imitators as inadequate. Misty's Big Adventure - how does a band led by a morose, chain-smoking Brummie with a dreadful haircut end up this much fun? Partly because the seven-piece band are clearly having a great time, partly because there is a 6ft 2 man dressed from head to foot in a suit festooned with rubber gloves whose only purpose is to dance like a necessary Bez but mainly because Grandmaster Gareth finds it easier to write great pop songs than anyone else in the UK. When I got this year's album, The Black Hole, I was surprised to find that I didn't already have half the songs because I knew them so well - in some cases I had in fact only heard them once but they had immediately lodged in my brain. Loving Misty's is like being part of a big, happy family - I grin, I dance, I make an idiot of myself. Why they haven't broken out of small venues yet is inexplicable but if this means I can get down the front easily so be it. Jeffrey Lewis - is there nothing this man cannot do? He can write slice of life songs with the best of them, he can do humour, he is a reasonable guitar player, he can sing in a stream of consciousness mode that is almost impossible to keep up with and he's a great comic book artist who's learned how to incorporate his art into his performances through his 'cheap videos'. His performance at the Green Man festival was startling to behold, the audience eating out of the palm of his hand after a half-hour set which brilliantly caught the mood of the afternoon. I love Jeff's obvious niceness and his intellect - his History of Communism 'video' at Water Rats last month is now far advanced and as good a primer for the subject as it's possible to imagine, given that it's delivered a capella, standing on a chair and by wielding two A3 drawing pads. KaitO - somehow I only saw them once this year, back in March at the Camden Crawl, but they were typically thrilling and raucous, unveiling a largely new set which has remained disappointingly unrecorded. Dave Lake had a whole set of new effects pedals, from which he wrenched noise like a croupier dealing cards, Nikki Colt seemed like Britain's greatest rock star and Gemma and Dieta did what they do brilliantly. I'm down to see them at the ICA in early January and, boy, am I looking forward to that. The Arcade Fire - quite apart from a great album their gig at the Astoria revealed a great live band too, already fully formed. Huge energy (it's difficult to take one's eyes of the female violinist, although there's movement everywhere) and a great set of songs. Roxy Music - I wrote here before about the fanclub gig at Koko and what a fab night out, seeing this band in a relatively intimate venue. Another band who have come back as at the peak of their form. I also really enjoyed tribute band Roxy Magic for which my mate Lee plays sax - - those in the Bristol or Birmingham area up for this sort of thing shouldn't hesitate to see them. Patti Smith - the Horses evening at Patti's Meltdown at the RFH was something special. Alasdair Roberts / The Earlies - two excellent performances from the Green Man festival. Roberts ranged across his own songs and traditional Scottish murder ballads with an increased assurance and won over an audience who could easily have opted for something easier while The Earlies packed the stage, sung fine songs and dealt with multiple power failures with such good humour that one almost felt that blown fuses were a good thing. Sigur Ros - architectural noise within Somerset House courtyard, a beautiful evening.
