Formed in 1977. Consisting of Malcolm Lane, Anton Loach, Simon Millward and Mark Rowlatt. The group was run along co-operative lines to include Jacqueline Bailey who handled publicity, promotion, etc. Formed own label - Dromm Records. Released 1 EP, "Dromm", "Slaves" and "Eulam's Beat", plus a cassette tape of first take rehearsal material called "Goatmanaut", also containing 3 tracks "Zordan Returns", "Chained" and "Thru the Black Hole". The groups first album "Hansten Klork was released in January 1980, closely followed by single, "Identify". Also appeared on Morgan Fisher's "Miniatures". All these recordings were made at the group's studio. Malcolm went on to form Luminaries and Dangerous Rhythm Records. Any knowledge of where any of them are much appreciated. kevin eden http://www.wireviews.com/wmo/index.html "dreams that money can buy" - --------------------------------- Yahoo! Sigur Rss: Takk This band has been mauled by the press in recent years, for no good reason I can see. With so many loving the band's "debut", "Agftis Byrjun" (despite "Von", their actual debut, being released two years earlier), follow-up "()" got hauled over the coals, and while "Takk" has been seen as something of a return to form, some have dismissed it as "more of the same". To do so utterly misses the point--it's rather like dismissing the new Franz Ferdinand record because they use guitars and drums (rather than for some other reason!)--Sigur Rss uses certain instruments and has a certain way of playing, which leads to a certain sound. But to lump them all together is no better than saying "all electronic music sounds the same". Takk, to put it simply, is a triumph. Utterly enthralling and beautiful throughout its entire length--and perhaps brighter and more hopeful than previous releases--it really is a magnificent effort. 2. Githead: Profile The Newmans and Scanner come up trumps with their debut long-player, which is more mature and deep than the EP. Although a little immediacy has been sacrificed, there are still plenty of exquisite pop moments to get your teeth into, including "My LCA"--Spigel's surprisingly emotionally charged tribute to her lomo camera--the insanely catchy "Wallpaper", and the punchy "Cosmology for beginners". Introspective moments peppered here and there also manage to add some variety to the proceedings. 3. Tom Vek: We Have Sound I suspect the wonderful "I Ain't Saying My Goodbyes" has something to do with this. After seeing his band live, Vek's "anthem" firmly lodged itself in my head, despite some of his other output being less than brilliant. However, the album itself holds up surprisingly well, even if his vocals could do with a bit more "oomph", as many tracks are delivered in monotone. Still, this is good, honest pop/rock. 4. Symptoms: Violence The first Symptoms album took me a while to get into, but "Burn", "Versus" and the amazing "You" are now my among my firm favourites from Swim's catalogue. The follow-up, "Apathy", perhaps lacked some of the spark that drove the debut album, and it slipped by me, much how his recent trio of download albums on PostEverything seem to have whizzed by everyone. While "Discipline" is--probably intentially ironically--a somewhat unfocussed half hour of music, "Joy" is like a pop record from an alternate dimension. However, "Violence" is the true stand-out--45 minutes of crunching, hard-hitting sound that recalls the very best of Symptoms' Swim releases. (And, yes, I know they're downloads rather than CDs, but you can always burn the MP3s to CDR if you want to.) 5. Sigur Rss: Hoppmpolla Yes, it's a single, but I don't care. "Hoppmpolla" managed to scrape into the UK Top 40 this week (at #35)--something of an achievement for a band with a sound that's unlike pretty much anything else you'll hear. While the title track and its "coda" ("Mep Blspnasir") are both excellent (and their wintry delights would have made a most excellent Christmas #1), the star of the show is the wonderful "Hafssl", otherwise known as "the one where the bassist plays his guitar with a drum stick when they play the song live". Originally found on debut album "Von", to say this track has evolved is a massive understatement. From the original durge, a powerful, sweeping and majestic track has been forged, rivalling anything in the Sigur Rss catelogue. Few are the times I can justify buying the single on the basis of a "b side", but this is without a doubt one of them. - ------- Craig Grannell / Wireviews --- http://www.wireviews.com News, reviews and dugga. "No Cities Left" by The Dears -- this was realeased at the end of 04 here in North America, but in early 2005 in the UK and Europe. i didn't get it until this year, so i will go ahead and consider it a 2005 release. anyway, this is an awesome complex album. the Dears can imitate anyone from The Smiths to Flying Suacer Attack when they try... beautiful album. "Outside Closer" by Hood -- this album was a slow grower, but i love it. "One Ten Hundred Thousand Million" by The Octopus Project -- excellent fun electroclash album from Austin, TX band. "Waves and Echoes" by Portal -- indie electro pop album that combines a bit of new wave and a bit of dreampop (a la Cocteau Twins), with a bit of IDM-ish beat mangulation. fun. at least, that's what i am thinking so far. i also really liked the latest releases from The Purrs, Nine Inch Nails, French Toast, Boards of Canada, and The Dirty Three.... and i still haven't recieved my copy of the latest Cocteau Twins remastering project, so there is that as well to consider! overall, it was a good year for music i would say. I'm having a 6pm cup of tea at this very moment to make the 5-midnight shift go that much more easily! And thanks for the good wishes, Dan. Although most of us are in the union here this doesn't really get us much more than negotiation rights over pay. Mrs Thatcher and John Major made sure that union power was much reduced (something you could argue the bigger unions brought on themselves back in the late '70s) and 'new' Labour has only made token efforts to restore some clout. ********************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. Discovery wasn't as good as Homework. :) In essence; it's bland, it's shallow, if you want a joyous electrodiscopop record go get Mylo's "Destroy Rock And Roll", if you want headbending French attention-deficit electrodisco get the Jackson and his Computer Band record (it's fabulous, especially the first two tracks). It's alright, and alright isn't good enough.
