Whilst the title of this ten-track album is a play on the old Stiff slogan If It Ain't Stiff., much of the music here sounds more like Blur than that old label's list of odd-bods like Costello, Dury and Wreckless Eric. Indeed, the second track - the exhaustingly long titled Baby! You Got Me Believing That There's No Such Thing As True Love Anymore - could easily fit on a mid-period Blur album with the singer sounding remarkably like Damon Albarn as he yelps, "I thought I was your only lover". And though Staff are an American act, they do what any self-respecting mid-90's Britpop band would do and rip off Wire on one track - Metal has that grinding, almost stop/start Pink Flag-era rhythm that Elastica proved so fond of, and a melody not a million miles away from one of that albums best tracks, Strange. Other highlights include the lovely piano led Headshake Baby and the exquisitely titled Teenagers Wearing Blazers. They close the album with the rather daft We Do Weddings, in which they advertise their availability in the most tongue-in-cheek fashion. We do birthday parties We do anything you want us to do We got guitar We got bass We got drums And what's more folks, as the song progresses it becomes apparent that they also do barbeques - although anyone in the UK thinking of booking Staff for a garden bash next summer, should perhaps bear in mind that their members live in Portland and New Orleans, so it's fair to say that an afternoon start may prove prohibitive. Still, if you're someone who likes a good tune, but wants their pop music situated near to the, er, field on the left, then this neat little package could well be one for you. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Nov 2005 15:59:41 EST From: MarkBursa@aol.com Subject: [idealcopy] OT: This Heat Box Set ReR (Chris Cutler's label) has just announced this: >>THIS HEAT BOX SUBSCRIPTION OFFER THE BOX will contain all the released material, newly re-mastered (This Heat, Deceit, Made Available, Repeat, Health and Efficiency), PLUS a CD of unreleased material selected and re-mastered by Charles Hayward & Charles Bullen, PLUS a fat book of interviews, articles, photograph, memorabilia and documents that trace the history and contextualise work of the group. Cheers Mark, this was the incentive I've been after for years to replace my This Heat vinyl. Did I ever tell the list how I bought the Health and Efficiency 12inch for a pittance somewhere? Anyway, during a poverty-stricken moment (I probably needed something essential, like beer) I took it and a stack of records to a second-hand music store in Bristol where I got a few pounds for the lot, no doubt. Anyway a couple of weeks later I was browsing for records in the same shop (yes, yes, I know but we humans are full of inconsistencies) and what should I see but the H&E 12inch in the 20p bargain bin. I got some funny looks when I bought it back so they must have realised it had been my record in the first place! - -----Original Message----- From: MarkBursa@aol.com [mailto:MarkBursa@aol.com] Sent: 25 November 2005 21:00 To: idealcopy@smoe.org Subject: [idealcopy] OT: This Heat Box Set ReR (Chris Cutler's label) has just announced this: >>THIS HEAT BOX SUBSCRIPTION OFFER THE BOX will contain all the released material, newly re-mastered (This Heat, Deceit, Made Available, Repeat, Health and Efficiency), PLUS a CD of unreleased material selected and re-mastered by Charles Hayward & Charles Bullen, PLUS a fat book of interviews, articles, photograph, memorabilia and documents that trace the history and contextualise work of the group.
