I hope he had a big hand in the way it sounded as its one of a handful of albums I think stand up against any great work in any form - totally unique and complete in and of itself but I've sometimes wondered if he had more to do with the logistics of making it happen or perhaps just hoped that having his name associated with it would help Wyatt at a time when various musical pals were all rallying round him when he was just "recovering" from his fall. He did also produce The Damned's first album (I think). This was, apparently, a farce as he was, according to one member , "clueless". They were probably equally clueless though as they ended up with Nick having failed to secure the services of Syd Barrett. As if... As for the Dury lane album, poor sound quality aside, I'd thoroughly recommend this to Wyatt fans. The version of Rock Bottom is quite different, like you say Keith, probably less sublime but it still works surprisingly well given a much more visceral performance (in places) than I would've thought it could stand. I've always understood this album to be about the inner workings of male/female relationships (not least Wyatt and Benge's) and if there is some kind of yin/yang thing going on I think this version gives a more "masculine" interpretation. But don't let my pretentious drivel put you off -its just great. Nick Mason didn't applaud (dreaming of giant crumpets probably) but Gilmour did...well he and Barney Sumner have a lot in common if you think about it. Anyway it was sort of car crash TV but fascinating insight into the grim world of rock & roll bitchiness, bad attitudes and bad blood! 1. Mitch Mitchell and Slash from Guns N Roses attempting to do a sort of bizarre double act while inducting Hendrix...followed by a lumpen version of Hey Joe that went on for ever. 2. The Kinks! Ray Davies visibly uncomfortable, failed to join Dave and the rest of the band at first...finally walked up to join them to accept the award but paced up and down behind them before just saying "Mummy & Daddy love you" to each of his kids as if disgusted by the very idea of being honoured for his music. 3. Barney from New Order mocking Slash's awful Hendrix tribute by trying to play guitar with his teeth at the end of 'Love Will Tear us Apart' 4. Bob Dylan couldn't even be arsed to do a clip...which considering the Kinks actually sat next to each other for a bit is a bit of a fucking cop out. 5. Pink Floyd...Roger Waters was looming over Gilmour and Nick "Giant Crumpet" Mason by video linkup and yet you could still cut the tension with a knife...and he clearly took Gilmours comment about 'passengers on the bus' the wrong way! Only good bit was the Peel tribute with Buzzcocks doing 'Ever fallen in love' with Hooky on bass and various obscure indie types joining in, big shambolic noise which Peel would have loved. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 18 Nov 2005 22:48:26 -0600 From: "dan bailey" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Re: [idealflopy] What i want to know iz (was US vs UK etc.) or perhaps he renamed himself to honor modern english's lead singer? dan > He took his mother's maiden name, Gray (Grey?)
