I was too. IC massive included Mr Bursa, and Mr Another The Ian aka "Bunny Smedley" (any others we missed?) Grand gig it was too. ACR just about managed to join the dots between their ridiculously varied back catalogue. Their early stuff..whcih they tossed off in a ten minute medley sounds very relevant now (Do The Du being the highlight). But their mid 80s and early 90s stuff sounds a bit dated now. Poor old ACR, they never will fit in...but they managed to pull it off with 'Shack Up', and Martin Moscrop (guitar) is always a joy to listen to. New Order were fantastic. IC Massive managed to hold its ground quite near the front..I was expecting a wave of pissed Manc football hooligans to sweep us away from the moment Alan Wise introduced them and they struck the first note of 'Ceremony' but it never came...presumably they couldn't get a babysitter. Well, it was a Monday night after all. On the downside, First time I've seen them without Gillian Gilbert. Phil Cunnigham ruined the magic a bit for me by overplaying...adding crashing powerchords on Transmission and Shadowplay when really Bernards sinuous guitar lines should be allowed to ride Hooks bass without and R&R bluster.. Gillian Gilbert was a very important part of New Order...the Kim Deal/Kim Gordon factor. She had a disciplined playing style (a Robert Gotobed style I feel!) and disconnected, feminine coolness that would have made tonight perfect instead of just brilliant. If you don't believe me watch the footage of her playing on the new DVD...she's fucking brilliant. New Order also try a bit too hard to put on a show nowadays, they remind me a bit of Status Quo! All the mystery, attitude and aloofness is almost gone (compared to say Kraftwerk who still are like something from another planet), which is a shame but at the same time its fun to watch these static figures we know from the old Factory vidoes come to life and dance all over the stage like dads at a wedding. Gripes aside, it was a great gig (how could it not be?!)...Love Vigalentes, Your Silent Face and the crowd singing the 'wooo ooo oooh oooh' bits on Temptation was worth the admission. And to hear all those Joy Division songs ; Transmission, She's Lost Control, Shadowplay(!), Warsaw(!) and Atmosphere...in the Manchester Apollo?! Well come on! P,s I don't much like PF but I like Dave Gilmour cos he just seems like a decent guy and he's kinda cool, and I think his heart is in the right place. I like Nick Mason cos his book is funny and he helped cook the worlds biggest Scone or something. Roger Waters is a vile, humourless, fox hunting, screechy voiced, bitter twisted pompous c*nt. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V8 #313 *******************************
