I've by sheer chance managed to avoid "The Red shoes" , which, judging by the comments above is not a great loss. However, I've also neglected "The Dreaming", which, going by the above comments, looks like it's a much more serious omission........ To be honest she's one of those artistes I can appreciate the craft of, and her individuality as a performer without actually feeling a great need to own anything by her.... there was, unsurprisingly (given her age at the time of writing) , a naivete about some of her stuff that just made me wince greatly. In part redeemed by a memorable spot on TOTP doing 'Hounds of Love', decked out in a suit:...... >The generally stuffy Artsworld Channel on Sky is currently showing the >45-minute promo film KB made for the Red Shoes album - which of course is a >serious homage to the Powell & Pressburger film of the same name. I was particularly impressed with what he did a couple of years ago, when after getting married again, he sold his London pied-de-terre for something like 4 or 5 million quid, and then promptly gave the whole lot to some housing charity like 'Shelter' or 'Crisis at Christmas':- and the icing on the cake was that he did it 'on the quiet' eschewing the publicity that the charity were going to afford him. It eventually came out via a third party long after the event. Doubtless the cynics will say, well "F***ing hell, he can afford it:- after all there's only so many Spitfires and Hawk Jets you can buy", but I say "Good on him". A gesture like that represents a not inconsiderable amount of dosh even to someone as well-off as DG and I'm willing to bet the generosity was *very* welcome to the recipients. Added to which, he's the one member of his erstwhile band who'll hove up at a benefit concert at the drop of a hat, and was the only one to play at the original Live Aid (with Brian Ferry, IIRC) And I *still* think he's the most melodic guitar player I've ever heard. If only he could do it in 30 seconds instead of 20 minutes......... ;-) - --------------------------------- Yahoo! Gilmour always did look like a decent bloke, but I'd rather have a pint with him than listen to his phlegmatic guitar playing. All this of course doesn't apply to the Syd Barrett era, which was just the opposite of what I just described. But I don't like Coldfly and am quite proud that I don't know who Fiona Apple is. Had the distinct pleasure of experiencing two of my all time favourite contemporary classical pieces in the flesh last week - Gavin Bryars' "The Sinking Of The Titanic" and "Jesus' Blood Never Failed Me Yet". Very well realised by our own Crash Ensemble, with excellent lighting design that really amplified the mood of the pieces. "Titanic" had suitably submarine greens and blues with shifting shadowplay throughout, and "Jesus' Blood" began in darkness witht the tramp's voice seeming to come from backstage at first, fading up at snail's pace, eventually with strings joining in with a glacially slow fade up of a deep red background, which eventually returned to darkness. Stunning. And, would you believe it, another freebie - I won the tickets through a competition in the Irish Times (bless 'em)...
