On the evidence of last year's Kimono My House / Lil Beethoven gig, Keith, I'd beat a path to the door right now, Pilot or no Pilot. There is always another name that shows up in me, when Kate Bush is appearing. I believe David Gilmour of Pink Floyd discovered her some 25 years ago. And the Floyd is where I am listening to now and then at daytime. Don't know if Wire were aware of the Floyd sound when 154 was made, but I always thought especially a track like A Mutual Friend had their influence. Listened in low quality sound and liked the new Tortoise and Billy Prince etc. the new Animal Collective - Feels and curious about Magnetophone - The Man Who Ate The Man Simon Fisher Turner - Lana Lara Lata Fovea Hex - (Clodagh Simons, Some Eno's, a.o. and Andrew MacKenzie) And because the list is mentioning it that much Kate's Aerial tomorrow Sigur Ros in Later with Jools haunted weather on the 11th of november j. - --------------------------------- Yahoo! IIRC it's not so much that he 'discovered' her, so much as he was *one of* the first to spot her potential, but he *did* put a reasonable wodge of his cash behind her 'career development'. And I'm nearly sure he did some of the arrangements for 'The Kick Inside', inc. Wuthering Heights. The solo phrasing and coda are utterly redolent of his then style. He did occasionally act as accompanyist for some TV work, too. AS for the Wire link, certainly, there's some long sustained keyboard-work on "Chairs Missing" whos langourous mood "Like a heartbeat", "Being sucked in", reminded me of a certain Floydian touch. Although I'm not sure the band would necessarily agree, OR wish to hear it said...... ;-) dw - --- Jan Noorda wrote: > There is always another name that shows up in me, > when Kate Bush is appearing. Id heard a lot of good things about Explosions In The Sky, but they were something of a disappointment to me. OK they veered towards the Mogwai-like territory I like a lot, but there was something too frilly about the pretty little guitars lines that went nowhere, and despite that sonic wall-of-sound there was something horribly proggy about it especially the way the bassist stood, eyes closed and nodded sagely in time to the music. And as for one of the guitarists, rocking to and fro, whilst holding his guitar with one hand and seemingly conducting with the other well Im not a violent man, but heres a bloke who needed twatting if anyone ever did. And when, towards the end, the three front men all repeatedly pushed their guitars into the air (and back!) in unison - well, it was all a bit Status Quo Im afraid. The crowd loved them, though many of those who cheered rapturously at the end were the same folk who had so rudely talked through the bands quieter moments. As for me well I dont think theyre fit to lick the boots of, say, Caribou who used light and shade in their sound to such good effect in a recent gig in the same town. This was all too its like punk never happened for me. I await EITSs Snow Goose concept album some time next year! As for Four Tetwell, Id heard recently that watching Kieran Hebden behind his lap top was like watching paint dry, and theres certainly an element of truth in that, although personally I cant say watching four ugly blokes gurning in time to guitar music is any more interesting than watching someone who looked like Rio Ferdinand with a sensible haircut fiddling with knobs and playing with his mouse. As for the musicwell, I was all for walking out early on all the beauty that is to be found in the Rounds album was either bleeped or thumped into submission. Fortunately things improved, with Hebden finally allowing the beat to remain the same for more than ten seconds rather than smother every piece with extra percussion. People started to dance, Hebden began to smile and I began to enjoy it more. My foot even tapped Even so, I guess youd be just as well off looking at a photo of Hebden, whilst playing a Four Tet album loud in your house. Itd save you the price of a ticket ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Nov 2005 00:00:58 -0000 From: "Keith A" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] OT: Singing Bush! there's a rather good interview with KB in one of this months monthlies. Gilmour has his say, too. Someone played him a tape of her. He liked it, but thought it needed more work before a record company heard it. So he paid for the recordings, and even though he got his money back later, that's all he got apparently. So good on him I say. > IIRC it's not so much that he 'discovered' her, so > much as he was *one of* the first to spot her > potential, but he *did* put a reasonable wodge of his > cash behind her 'career development'.
