When asked about the film, he said things like "Punk wasn't about the bands, it was about a lifestyle". Also the interveiw featured the VERY brief clips of bands to which Paul refers, and an equally brief interveiw with Souxsie. I conclude that he inteneded this to be much more a social mirror than a rockumentary-style pic. I had to agree with his disdain for the way Punk was so quickly assimilated and sold as a binbags-and- safety-pins fashion statement by the media. Was PUnk a "Phenomenon of a hundered days"...? Well it's neither this nor that - just a collection of opinions mostly from people whose views and insights are not particularly interesting or just done to death. You end up with a very vague notion of what punk is except a "fuck you to everything" which can be applied to lots of other music genres. I had to agree with his disdain for the way Punk was > so quickly assimilated and sold as a binbags-and- > safety-pins fashion statement by the media. Was PUnk a > "Phenomenon of a hundered days"...? Discuss. So why does he keep going about the post-1978 punk? Even hardcore! There is some criticism but it is limited to the person uttering it, and also - why show this crap while at the same time some people did really great music which truly fulfilled the spirit of punk, though not music-wise of course. Also, if he wanted to show how punk was assimilated by the mainstream he could've at least try to show why and how it happened, and not just present a succession of artists. As to the hundred days phenomenon, I do think the musical form of punk was too limited and primitive to remain relevant for too long, and what came after was so good that I'm quite glad punk 'died'. Does anyone know how DL regarded Wire's music or the > Band's approach? Is 'our boys' absence due to lack of > footage, or some editorial value-judgement? They probably didn't fit his image of punk lifestyle, so he chose to ignore them. - -- Now playing: http://www.last.fm/user/giluz/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Nov 2005 21:12:49 -0600 From: David McKenzie Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Colin's memories of Cold Storage studios you might be a tad late to the parade On 11/9/05, Derek White wrote: > > Now that sounds like my kind of studio ! On the subject of Steve Jones, the "Classic Albums" dvd/film for "Never Mind The Bollocks" is surprisingly good. The band, including Jones, talk a fair amount of sense and seem to have made some kind of peace with eachother. Tony. > > 7.
