I used to really like that band. It seemed to have a lot of oomph and some decent music, especially in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Things went a bit sour after Wilder left, though, and everything since has been pretty awful, really. As for the new album, that got a big "meh" from me when I reviewed it for Pixesurgeon (http://pixelsurgeon.com/reviews/review.php?id=851 for those who are interested). This means that those all over the globe can marvel at his different win/lose/draw musical cadences and admire the faultlessness of his 'received pronounciation'. This despite having a fine posh-Scottish name. No idea who does it on the telly. The bloke who used to do the rugby, I think. Hope MES remembers to put some teeth in or he could be stumbling a bit over Rushden and Diamonds or Inverness Caledonian Thistle. Despite its name, the film approaches punk as a musical genre rather than an attitude: from the Velvets till Nirvana. I always found this attitude quite boring - punk as a genre is rarely interesting after 1978, and as for Nirvana - a nice enough band, whose importance was more commercial than anything else, hence not very interesting and also done to death (no pun intended). 2. You get something like 5 seconds from each song, and some of the footage shows performances that have nothing to do with what's played on the soundtrack, done very amateurly (can u say that?). I can accept when they take live footage and stick the studio version on it, because the original is really lo-quality, but to hear Joe Strummer's voice while not moving his lips is nothing short of naff. 3. And instead of just letting the music tell the story most of the people interviewed just don't have too much to tell, but they keep on talking regardless - while people like Thurston Moore and Henry Rollins are intelligent and have some insight, those guys from NY Dolls or the drummer of the Ramones are just not very interesting, especially what they have to say about things that they weren't involved in. 4. That Dancing In the Streets episode titled 'No Fun' was much better - still waiting for a film to top that one. It really captured the essence and the mood, took a more balanced attitude between music and talk and was at least fucking intelligent. 5. Wire are not mentioned at all. 6. The bonus DVD is just a collection of stuff edited out of the main film, divided into subjects like "women in punk" or "punk & art" and is even more tedious than the film itself. 7. The only good thing: It's the first time I heard Steve Jones say more than "I just wanted to have my cock sucked". cheers giluz - -- Now playing: http://www.last.fm/user/giluz/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Nov 2005 17:33:09 EST From: PaulRabjohn@aol.com Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Don Letts' 'Punk: Attitude' i was a bit worried about this one , the sleeve mentions loads of bands but is strangely vague about precisely what footage of those bands are in the movie. i suspected it was about the love of don's life ( i.e himself) funny how DL never mentions or seems to have filmed wire. the roxy was a very important stepping stone for them both , yet wire don't seem to feature in his version of events. i suppose he didn't film them or he'd have cashed in on the footage by now....... p ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Nov 2005 01:08:14 +0000 (GMT) From: Fergus Kelly Subject: [idealcopy] Alistair kindly remembered in updated Githead site A big thank you to all the members of Githead for remembering our dear friend. http://www.githead.com/gallery_20050928.html Fergus ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Nov 2005 02:03:33 +0000 From: Tim Subject: Re: [idealcopy] Feud Feud Feud Keith Knight wrote: > Is Mike Love the most unpleasant man in pop? He is deeply unpleasant, and the notion that Brian Wilson has tarnished the Beach Boys reputation is a bit rich coming from a man who spent the last 30 years trying to reduce the Beach Boys to the status of an end-of-the-pier 60s revival act like they were the frigging Merseybeats or something. However, one of the reasons Pet Sounds is such an amazing album is you cannot believe that a band with Mike Love as a member could make such a record. Would it have had the same impact without him? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Nov 2005 02:48:38 +0000 From: Tim Subject: [idealcopy] OT: Singing Bush! Bit quiet on the list, presumably we're all digesting the new Kate Bush album?! (I bet Graeme isn't!) Anyway, initial thoughts are I rather like it and something of a relief...it is not crap at all. Not an instant 'yesss', but intriguing enough to warrant lots of further listens (like all good records). It takes some adjusting to get back into Kate Bush esp if like me you've mostly been listening to Venetian Snares, Black Dice, OOIOO and the mighty Fall. Actually, she shares a singular vision, a certain attitude and attention to artistic vision with all these artistes, but she does occasionally dip into serious tweeness/cheesiness.....and yet you feel it all stems from a certain bold honesty and dogged independence that Mark E Smith would identify with if he wasn't Totally Wired. It is this attitude and integrity that sets her apart from the worlds of Sting and Rod Stewart that she could have so easily (and so nearly) veered into. This isn't a commercial record at all, I wonder if it will sell much once the fans and the curious have got it...there are certainly no hit singles on here, no clouds being busted..just (feather) dusted. 1st disc reminds me of of New York Tendaberry by Laura Nyro. Very stripped down, pianos and echoes. Songs about washing machines, maths etc. Currently, I prefer 2nd disc which is a bonkers song-cycle with scary cuckoos chanting "A sea of Honey, A Sky of Honey", laughing pigeons, Rolf Harris and all sorts of loopy weirdness. Its a grower...not a show-er. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Nov 2005 21:01:22 -0000 From: "Keith A" Subject: [idealcopy] DARLA.COM v3.0....new releases i'll probably pass on this myself, but joy division completists = may be interested in this...=20 - -------------------------------------------------------------------------= - - =20 JOY DIVISION Let The Movie Begin cd $14.99 =20 Ozit (UK)=20 COMING 11/21/2005 5033531079523.
