[David McKenzie Subject: Re: [idealcopy] The first day of Fitzmas Having weathered numerous similarly incomprehensable posts on British sports and politics which give trouple to even a part time anglophile such as myself, I thought to respond in kind. The Chicago White Sox won 9/10 of their final post-season games, sweeping (taking 4/4 games of) the World Series. A series which included the longest World Series game (14 innings), a Grand Slam (home run with men on all bases), fabulous pitching and defence on both sides, clutch hitting by the Sox, one goofy manager focussed on fundamentals, some of the worst officiating in history (leading to a number of butterfly wing suppositions), and too many examples to mention of the almost Cagian indeterminant nature of Baseball; In short, all the things I love about baseball. The SOX were a virtually selfless team all season, and all the more in the post season. I use the past tense, because the reality of contract negotiations looms large. But it was refreshing to see egos and dollars set aside for the season and left for the off season (where they belong). This also ended an 88 year baseball world championship drought in Chicago. While that Chicago team has had a few post-season forays in recent memoury, those are best forgotten. I 'grew up' in the Detroit area, and am a lifetime Tigers fan, but have never experienced a ticket-tape parade, my father having declined to take me in '68, and my job taking me to Kansas City in '84. It was pretty darn exciting and inspiring. Even more inspiring and exciting, in a Chicago way as well, are the first fruits of Patrick J Fitzgerald's investigation into the crimes surrounding Robert Novak's public identification of a covert CIA operative. Friday saw the indictment of VIce-President Dick Cheney's (now former) Chief of Staff on 5 felony counts which could dress him in an orange jumpsuit for up to 30 years. Fitz(mas)gerald is an extremely intelligent, effective and diligent prosecutor who has an impressive track record in difficult and complicated corruption cases. He is also, to date, slime proof, which renders this Administration's defence of choice impotent. Those whod are dissapointed at only one indictment should review his record. Those who think that Perjury and Obstruction are 'technicalities' should review Fitz's track record as well. All are advised to listen to the man's press conference and try to imagine anything good happening to Scooter in court. Make no mistake; Fitzgerald's job is to find and prosecute criminals, and he is damn good at it. Those of us who actually beleive in the fundamental values of our country have at long last some one to point to. Expect a groundswell. This is not about politics, this is about the law of the land, and those who break it. My happiness is only tempered by my regret at the damage these people have done to our nation and the world. there: is that better? It's a fair question and, though I'm sure people aren't at all interested in excuses, they may also be (vaguely) aware that I have made the 160-mile round trip to London a few times in the last 18 months for pretty trivial reasons (ie, gigs). We were short staffed this week (with job cuts due before Christmas to add to the fun) and I worked a 10.45am-8pm shift on the day of Alistair's funeral. To get out of that for anything other than a crisis within my immediate family was, sadly, out of the question. I'm sure we were all there in spirit and have raised a glass or several in memory of Alistair. To have Colin there representing the band and, in effect, the list is probably better than we could have hoped for. I like to think Alistair and his family would understand.
