I can't figure out why anyone would spend $35.00 to sit for 2 hours with their finger in one ear and a cell phone in the other. the band suffered through an overzealous stage crew in were too often underfoot fixing things the band didn't feel needed to be fixed. one of them wound up with a couple of the machine heads from the bass up his arse for his trouble. they also seemed to be suffering poor sound from the monitors, making it difficult to hear one another and causing a bit of drift. how a band deals with this kind of thing is one of the determining factors of greatness. the band laughed it off and had fun with it although they were clearly angry about it and said a few things. primadonnas will stop the show and berate the sound men or toss their instruments and leave the venue. a great band keeps making great music through great effort and that effort comes across to the crowd even at a level at which most of them are unaware. there were several transcendent moments. andy gill was just phenomenal. i love people like andy or live-evil/bitches brew era miles in that they can make me feel like i just shot several bags of good dope without doing anything. defying the laws of music and bending things in such as a way as to actually redefine an instrument's role entirely within the context of a basic guitar band is ungodly achievement. redefining the entire g.d. unit with everyone off in a different direction and everthing hanging together is just jaw droppingly awe inspiring. the band was in good form. energetic. a few hoarse notes but to be expected at this juncture of a tour. that the irony of the show was probably completely lost on a hollywood crowd only furthered the propostion. half the crowd was there because they are there every night. it looked like everyone that knew of the band brought at least three or four people. it was like looking out in the crowd and recognizing your tribe by the few individuals that knew the tunes and knew how to dance their asses off to that stuff and everyone else that has been raised on slick prefab pablum, who had a seemingly wonderful time dancing to the canned madonna music during the intervals, were completely out at sea with this pulsating, pounding, atavistic resurgence and it's woeful paen and railing against the tide of technology, conformity, and the unquestioning slavering and slavery to the consumerism so worshipped and embraced by the audience themselves. i had some idiot in a nudie hand tooled fringed jacket looking like a dowdy gram parsons stand next to me all through "to hell with poverty" with his fists in the air and stomping $1000.00 cowboys. how much does it cost to be yourself? after the show he got in one of those humvee limos about a block long (10 miles to the gallon and 2 dead soldiers a day). guess he did alright making charlie and the chocolate factory and now was speeding off to his own club where his buddy river phoenix did the "flip flop and fly" on the side walk out front while that twat from "married with children" stood there like an idiot. the limo seemed out of place after afterone chanting "guerilla war struggle is the new entertainment". and why do the guys in the crowd only get really loud with "the rubbers he hides..." i mean, hello, that proves you missed the point, right? hugo was kicking ass and taking hyphenated names. i've always thought that he is one of the greatest and most individually styled drummers to ever squat between a pair of heels and i'm a drummer. we rarely have anything good to say about anyone, let alone another drummer. it's like "if you don't have anything good to say about others, come sit next to me." hugo held down the fort. the band shimmered and shone. it was great to see them and some of the stuff was so spot on close to the original that even i, at age 49, felt like a pretty bad assed hot rodded monkey walking back to my car, which by the way, has never had it's seats graced by the likes of anyone from Current 93, so if they deny having ever been in my lorry, neither red no yellow, they are telling the truth. i felt so good i didn't even stop at pink's for an ozzy dog but now i wish i had. it was an uplifting show and it felt good to be with, and see, my tribe again. you know who i mean...we always felt that, whoever the band was, they were ours, and wanker poseurs, didn't have a clue. we always threw on jeans, sneaks, and a tee 'cause we were going to an effing rock show. we were going to get a bit mussed up. you don't put on your best clothes to do that. we went to participate not gawk. many of us went on to have our own bands and dressed the same way even then. we were who we were, onstage and off. there is an honesty about that which is unheard for the most part in any real way. there are a lot of rich kids trotted out in front of us with brand new designer jeans that their personal assistants just cut the holes in the knees of and looking as comfortable in a pair of converse as an iraqi war vet sporting dual prosthesis. ah blather. am i making myself clear to anyone?
