Belatedly catching up with my reading of Plan B magazine, there's a fine interview with Sonic Youth in Issue 7 by Everett True (who can do this sort of thing really well when minded). At one point they start dissing Pixies: "We went to see Pixies last year." recounts Thurston. "We ran out of the auditorium. Not all reformed bands are bad, though. I saw the Gang of Four reunion in Barcelona. It was one of the best shows I've seen. They were so nihilistic and dark. They were angular and jagged, like 'fuck you' to the audience" [True] That sounds like a Wire show I caught in Melbourne a few years back - in a dingy Richmond pub they turned in a venomous performance that belied their age. I'm not sure I recognised a single song and I'm a fan. I caught Rocket from the Tombs by chance in Detroit a while ago and they were incredible - David Thomas waddling across the stage like rock's Orson Welles. Thurston nods in agreement. "When Mission of Burma reformed two years ago I went to see them," he enthuses. "I had real anxiety. They were incredible - as good as before, but better because they had matured. No one plays like this anymore and it scares me. They were a good, independent, alternative rock band, reinforcing everything contemporary to them, be it Wire, Gang of Four, British art school to middle American. I saw them at the same time as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Interpol, Liars - who I all like somewhat - but his was so much more rich." Which rather concurs with my view of live performance at present. I've not had the pleasure of Mission of Burma or Rocket from the Tombs live but Wire and Go4 have certainly been up there in the last few years with the all-time best of them - as have VdGG, The Magic Band, Biting Tongues, Sparks, Brian Wilson. Pixies live this year didn't have the same intensity (or, in the case of Brian Wilson, transcendence), although my enjoyment of them obviously outstrips Sonic Youth's. There are a few newer live acts out there who are up with the best - KaitO, Misty's Big Adventure, Jeffrey Lewis, Sigur Ros, TV on the Radio, The Earlies. - but many - like those quoted by Thurston, all of whom I've seen live and all of whom have a decent reputation - don't quite hack it in the company of their elders (although I am quite fond of all of them, especially Liars). And this lot are significantly better than the likes of Bloc Party, The Killers, Futureheads. It makes me wonder if I don't take Sonic Youth somewhat for granted. I haven't seen them live for probably six or seven years, whereas if they'd gone away sometime in the early 90s and come back in the last couple of years I'd have fallen over myself to see them.
