I had not heard them before, and live the singer was not as much like David Byrne, as he is on the album (I bought the CD at the gig). What I kept thinking during the show was "if Bob Dylan joined Violent Femmes, and VF had a normal instrumentation, this would be it." Once I listened to the record, I could see the DB connection. I am not too familiar with TH catalog, except for a few songs here and there (on their early catalogue). I agree that a few people on the list will like them. cheers! - -fernando On Oct 9, 2005, at 4:40 AM, Keith Knight wrote: > I've spent chunks of the last 24hours listening to the debut album of > this Brooklyn band and liking what I hear a great deal. Amazing performance of Philip Jeck or by Benni Jonas Nielsen. Sound of organ that shook my organs. http://www.sr.se/cgi-bin/p2/program/index.asp?programID=2113 Also the David Sylvian interview on mixing it was interesting. Making music with people without personal meeting. This is the modern world. Went to a performance of the Tiger Lillies the weekend before. I once bought there album with Kronos Quartet. And I thought they are funny. This performance was well played, but not much variety in style. Never repeat the same kind of joke. Heard from them after the concert they will release a DVD next year with Alexander Hacke (from Einsturzende Neubauten). And Tim? Was there harmony between the three: mind, sense and body when you listen to the H3O recordings? I am nearly sure Andrew has some Gurdjieff texts and sound on his shelves. Hope he is doing fine. Last message was he had to leave Iceland. Ran out of money. Started with a pageturner. Cryptonomicon written by Neal Stephenson. j this from GR ..with ignorance and hate... I listened to the album and liked what I heard, and I guess that is what counts. I would not mind seeing them live, alas, there is no domestic release of the album here in the US (though I managed to find the 2CD UK issue used here, which was strange). thanks for the We Are Scientist lead. cheers! - -fernando On Oct 10, 2005, at 10:45 AM, Andrew Lumbard wrote: > 2nd 'heads-up' given to me of this band, along the lines of "well if > you > like that lot Andy, You'll like these". 3 excellent downloads on the > website. > I'd also give a shout to We Are Scientists having seen them with > Editors on > Saturday. > > AndyL ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Oct 2005 00:00:32 +0100 From: "Keith Knight" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] OT: Sweet / Glam (was Franz F but we got bored ...) - -----Original Message----- From: owner-idealcopy@smoe.org [mailto:owner-idealcopy@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Tim Johnny Rotten mentions being very annoyed about being quoted as having Van der Graf Generator as an influence in this months Record Collector. He says he liked VDG but they didn't influence the Pistols. - ---------------------------- Hmm, it's odd this as he claims the quote is in a new biography of VdGG - - which is in the works but not published yet and the author claims not to have sent him an advanced copy. It's difficult to see too much VdGG musical influence in the Pistols, although Lydon may have been more influenced by Hammill's 1975 punk album, Nadir's Big Chance, from which John played 'Institute of Mental Health Burning' on the legendary Capital Radio show in 77.
