I'd say that Cast of Thousands is much harder work. I bought a copy with the DVD just the other day and, frankly, although most of the tracks are very good they could almost all be trimmed by a minute or two at last. Everyone I know says Free World is more immediate that Cast. Just listen to the title track - it's really catchy. Mexican Stand-off and one or two other tracks are a bit disappointing because they seem to be retreads of what Elbow have done before but even the first album has a couple of duller tracks towards the end. Then again, not every track can be the wonderful 'Tailfly'. ********************************************************************** This email and any files transmitted with it are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. All this reminiscing on my childhood affection for The Sweet dredged something else up, and since the list is quietish, and nobody I know in the flesh can help can anybody remember this programme that I was traumatised by when I was a kid of about 5 or 6? Could be a film or just an edition of a TV series; it was definitely North American. The bits that I recall were of a man called Frank Cunningham who was beset by images of random people he'd see in the street; these images were maybe dreams or hallucinations but if he saw, say, a little girl skipping, this would translate in his dream to a little girl skipping in front of a large bonfire with her back to us; she turns round and we see that instead of a face there's a skull; same thing with telephone engineers, policeman etc (though they weren't skipping, unfortunately, but in front of a bonfire, back to us, turn round, skull). Another dream he has involves him and his wife stood beside a coffin in the middle of an autumnal forest. Scared the hell out of me as a kid, and occassionally pops up in my head to fascinate me. I think Frank dies at the end "of fright" as somebody announces to people waiting for news of him. My very first album -bought for me for my 7th birthday was The Sweet's Biggest Hits. I think I'm a bit younger than ATKeith. I remember when one of their singles (possibly Hellraiser) was at number 2 in the charts. Me and my brother put our money together and went to Woolworths to by it, convinced that this one more sale was all it took to push it up to number 1 (one chart place, one more sale - bingo!). We were mortified and crestfallen when the new chart came out and they were still stuck at number 2. On the subject of Steve Priest's effeminate "we just haven't got a clue..." interjections, I loved the Monty Python take on that with their 'Ronettes Sing Mediaeval Agrarian History" - a song that's got a more Glitter Band than Sweet feel, with the gruff ganged up voices singing "...the framework was complete...by the time..." with the Steve Priest type interjection "...of the Roman Conquest!" The Damo thing will be an improv affair I take it, so I guess its the choice between Cale playing his new LP plus selected highlights of his solo career and the odd Velvets tune, vs Damo just riffing away with 3 different groups playing gawd knows what. Where is Cale playing? I've only seen him once in a small, standing venue and he was brilliant...v arresting performance. Great set, and just to see him plug in his viola and play a brilliant Venus In Furs made this one of the best gigs I have ever seen. Flitting between playing pop song one minute, to playing completely a completely mangled version of 'Fear..' to playing gorgeous ballads. He was a great showman. So if Cale is playing a club or small venue go see that one. If not, I guess Cale is still your safe option (the new LP is pretty good from what I've heard so far..you can't really go wrong if you just wantto hear a great artist play some good songs)..Damo is the wildcard and could go either way depending on how good the 3 bands he plays with are. I'm not familiar with the people he's playing with. I daresay he will take you to some exciting musical moment at some point! Whatever floats your boat!
