Three consecutive 1 minute tracks from Pink Flag would have been appropriate (don't remember him being a big fan of Complete Control myself) and, yes, leaving off Ivor Cutler really is unforgivable. I shall turn to my Cornology set for comfort and buy the Warchild disc instead - new tracks from Radiohead, Elbow, Coldplay, the Coral, etc - and out on Monday in the UK for #9.99 (I think). Tracks can be downloaded from http://www.7digital.com/shops/default.aspx?shop=15 now... it's a very good cause too. They played Dublin last week, and I went along hoping to see a 'band', but my heart sank when I saw a stage devoid of conventional instruments, as I have limited patience for chappies with lappies. Also, there were three large video screens. Oh dear, I thought... is this a club or a gig ? Well, the set was reasonably entertaining if rather overstretched at 2 hours (always leave 'em wanting more), and the visuals were incredibly old hat. I know Jack Dangers has always had a thing about 50s b-movies and cold war paranoia samples, but his trawl through acres of video footage, with constant 80s style scratch edits was tired to the point of tedium. Not heard the E&TB LP, but the b-side (well other track on the cd single!) of the latest 45, Stormy Weather, is very good. I've had a bit of a love-hate relationship with the Bunnymen since The Back of Love (or maybe even before then?). But every now and again they pull off something that I like despite thinking that Mac has more gob than substance - I must admit I liked the first couple of albums of their late 90's re-union. But I wasn't even thinking about getting the latest E&TB album - esp after not liking the live session track I heard on Mark Radcliffe (which followed a fantastic rendition of the Killing Moon, it must be said). But then I heard What If We Are (vocal and string version) on the Blue Room, and it really is lovely (dunno if it's on the LP). So my love/hate relationship with the Bunnymen continues. Mac might be a big gob who will never (IMO!) be as great as he thinks he is, but just as I write him off, he'll come up with something that does it for me - and his vocs are spot on on this one... As for Citizen Cain'd... Well it's a mixed bag for sure. Disc 1 is almost Brain Donor-like in that it's Cope-does-the-Stooges. Disc 2 has a fantastic opening track, though my son thought it was a bit proggy! I must also warn readers of a sensitive nhature that there are slide guitars involved and comparisons (howvere unfair!) have been made with Lynard Skynard!! But there's more than enough there for a Cope fan like me to love. Another album this year from someone from that scene is Skyray's Liquid Crystal Display - in other words, the new LP from original TX-keyboard player and former Wild Swan, Paul Simpson. It's light and sort of frothy, but I like it a lot. The opening track, Skyray Is Love, is borderline-trite that wouldn't be to everyone's liking here, but I think it's just so uplifting. And god knows, we all need to hear something that will put a smile on our faces sometimes. It all seems very appropriate to be writing about all this - just got back from a day in Liverpool. Mangaed to see the summer of Love Psychedelia exhibition at the Tate - just in time, too. It finishes tomorrow. Interesting, but kind of exhausting...
