The former First Lady's remarks were aired this evening on National Public Radio's "Marketplace" program. She was part of a group in Houston today at the Astrodome that included her husband and former President Bill Clinton, who were chosen by her son, the current president, to head fundraising efforts for the recovery. Sen. Hilary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama were also present. In a segment at the top of the show on the surge of evacuees to the Texas city, Barbara Bush said: "Almost everyone I've talked to says we're going to move to Houston." Then she added: "What I'm hearing which is sort of scary is they all want to stay in Texas. Everyone is so overwhelmed by the hospitality. "And so many of the people in the arena here, you know, were underprivileged anyway, so this--this (she chuckles slightly) is working very well for them." I can't help thinking that the acronym for The War Against Terror is TWAT, which just about sums this stupid fucking woman up.. Ferrrgus > __________________________________ Yahoo! Do we really want a disk from Kate that doesn't sound like her ? I don't think I do....... 2) Just what sort of nick her songwriting abilities are in, no-one knows. However, I'd suggest that the track record of once iconic and individual artistes returning to the fray after years off living the comfy domestic life aren't great. The example that vaults to the front of mind is John Lennon's "double fantasy" set, which was universally greeted by hoots of derision and most concluded it was a flabby effort, symptomatic of what he by then very palpably was :- i.e. a middle-aged man, writing soft-rock songs reflective of his new life. As far as I know, Kate's been doing the quiet getting-it-together-in-the-country domestic number during this hiatus(?), so to stretch the Lennon comparison way past it's tensile limits, I fear we're much more likely to get "Oh Yoko" or "Watching the wheels go round" than we are "Working class hero" or "Gimme some truth". Another case in point was Patti Smith's recent(ish) return to the fray (Trampin') which wasn't even "Easter" , let alone "Horses". And what about all those re-union albums ? Most returns to active duty like this have disappointed even long-time fans of the artistes in question, BUT with a devastating ON-TOPIC (!!) swerve, 'our boys' were a VERY honourable , [not to mention exceedingly rare] exception when they released "Send", which apart from "Nice streets above" was pretty much all killer. We can argue about where it sits in relation to other Wire stuff, but "Send" to me beat a good proportion of the Mk 2 incarnation's material hands down. I hope I'm wrong , and Ms Bushhhh delivers an all-killer, no filler release, but I fear a premature Xmas turkey. At best, AT Keith's option c) may come to pass. 4 good tracks and a shovel of make-weight padding? I feel that's the best we'll get. As for the Ashes win, Keith, I suspect I'm not alone in not being even remotely a fan of the game:- I loathed it at school, and hated it when our snotty games teacher dragooned us all into playing it. As a spectator sport, I regard the 5-day game(!!) in particular as being on a par with watching say, iron railings rusting, or paint drying. Even so, this series even managed to grab my jaded attention, mainly it must be said because it was the Aussies 'we' were beating, who've rubbed the national nose in it with monotonous regularity at each and every sport we take them on at. Didn't they even beat us at football [the *real* kind;-) ] a couple of years back? Anyhow, my point is, if it can grab even MY attention, it's *really* making progress with the game. (I managed to catch a lot of the entire series on TV) However, county games will still be played in front of one man and his dog next season, as per usual, and all the hoo-har about it overhauling soccer in the national affections is so much wishfull thinking. But for now , luxuriate in the warming glow............:-) Keith Knight wrote: > > And on 7 Nov, the most anticipated of all - Kate Bush's Aerial. Can it > be worth the wait? What the hell will it sound like? I didn't know it had a release date let alone a title. Lord knows what it will sound like its been so long. She could: a. Do something really mad and uncommercial like Scott Walker's 'Tilt' b. Do something that is kind of OK but a bit cheesy and will only be of interest to long time fans who can forgive her a lot, like Brian Wilsons 'Gettin' In Over My Head' c. Do something with 4 good songs on it like David Bowies last album which Q Magazine will say is her best since Hounds of Love which isn't really that good. d. Do an amazing, mindblowingly brilliant album that shifts human evolution up a gear. We'll see. Bring it on.........singing bush! - ------------------------------------------------------------ I suspect (c) is the most likely. I can't see here going the Tilt route, sadly and (d) is probably beyond her now - The Red Shoes had one moment of brilliance in 'Moments of Pleasure' but otherwise it wasn't up to Sensual World or Hounds of Love quality. It's still a tantalising prospect when a great artist comes back from a self-imposed lay-off though .................................... Another the Keith (coming down from the Ashes victory - I was at the Oval on Sunday and took the day off today to watch the cricket uninterrupted by such fripperies as work. I am implausibly elated. The cricket this summer will be like a beacon in the rest of my life and I fear that my son - who's 10 - may never see anything like it again if he lives to be 100). Tired of spam? Yahoo! Ta for the info. "Second lengh" is the re-tread of "Our Swimmer" done at (IIRC) a pretty fast and furious pace, is it? Only heard it the once , on a Peel program many years ago, but was pretty taken by it. Always really liked the song , despite it's long coda where not a great deal happens...... Remember JP saying "and there go Wire, grinning and picking their way into your ears wth that..." Bought it the next day. I rather care for the B-side, too ("Midnight Bahnhof cafe"):- I don't think this has ever surfaced on any album or compilation on CD, but maybe someone here knows better. As someone who doesn't own many of the singles, I really like the band to release a CD set tying together all the various b-sides into one package. If, once you exclude stuff that's appeared on album, there isn't enough material for a whole album, a 'mini-album' would do me.... I'll bet someone will now expose my rank ignorance and tell me such a beast exists.... Or what about a DVD with all the single promo vids? Is there enough vids for songs to make the project a goer ? The only one I've seen is "Kidney Bingoes". Tim wrote: And What about "Turns and > strokes" Out takes from Document and Eyewitness + extras.
