I've only seen photos of these...they look a bit dodgy! Tell me more. - -------------------------------------- Well, if you don't like Sigur Ros because of their 'iccy liccle voice and tingly bells', I suspect CocoRosie may not be for you, Tim, as they have iccy liccle voices and there are probably tingly bells on the first album somewhere - there's certainly no end of 'found sounds' in the mix, usually destabalising a simple acoustic guitar or piano refrain. The nearest comparison is with Joanna Newsom who I don't really like at all because her voice drives me to distraction. CocoRosie's voices are similarly high-pitched, even fey, but they don't tip over the edge into cat-screech unlistenability. They have a fine way with song structure, writing songs I come away from whistling but at the same time there's a experimental edge in the sounds, the vocal mix and the home recording - as I said it was allegedly recorded in a Paris bathroom and I'm sure some of it was. Lyrically they verge on the transgressive on occasions, mentioning the 'n' word and writing a song about the joy of being a housewife - which could be ironic but it's perfectly possible to read it literally. There's an erotic edge to them without ever being explicit and they can come up with some fine lines: 'If every angels terrible then why do you welcome them?'; 'I once fell in love with you just because the sky turned from grey to blue'. I like the first album a good deal and look forward to amazon delivering the new one. - -------------------------------------------------- > > A week later it's King Creosote's 'KC rules OK', his album backed by The > Earlies. One of my few claims to fame is that I used to be on the same label and Dj'd with The Earlies in an earlier incarnation. I Still bump into the Texan half of the band occasionally and apparently they have a "new direction". The Art of Noise and Propaganda were mentioned...I like that idea a lot. - ---------------------------------------------------- Not much evidence of a new Earlies direction at the Green Man, but I'll go with them where they want to go. What is their living arrangements - are the Texan half living over here now? - --------------------------------------------------- > > And on 7 Nov, the most anticipated of all - Kate Bush's Aerial. Can it > be worth the wait? What the hell will it sound like? I didn't know it had a release date let alone a title. Lord knows what it will sound like its been so long. She could: a. Do something really mad and uncommercial like Scott Walker's 'Tilt' b. Do something that is kind of OK but a bit cheesy and will only be of interest to long time fans who can forgive her a lot, like Brian Wilsons 'Gettin' In Over My Head' c. Do something with 4 good songs on it like David Bowies last album which Q Magazine will say is her best since Hounds of Love which isn't really that good. d. Do an amazing, mindblowingly brilliant album that shifts human evolution up a gear. We'll see. Bring it on.........singing bush! - ------------------------------------------------------------ I suspect (c) is the most likely. I can't see here going the Tilt route, sadly and (d) is probably beyond her now - The Red Shoes had one moment of brilliance in 'Moments of Pleasure' but otherwise it wasn't up to Sensual World or Hounds of Love quality. It's still a tantalising prospect when a great artist comes back from a self-imposed lay-off though and, yes Andrew, anticipation is even greater in these quarters than for the Boards of Canada album. Another the Keith (coming down from the Ashes victory - I was at the Oval on Sunday and took the day off today to watch the cricket uninterrupted by such fripperies as work. I am implausibly elated. The cricket this summer will be like a beacon in the rest of my life and I fear that my son - who's 10 - may never see anything like it again if he lives to be 100). ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Sep 2005 01:36:28 +0100 From: Tim Subject: [idealcopy] OT: Please help me choose an MP3 player! Calling all techies! I need some help choosing a new mp3 player. I used to have an Archos Jukebox 20 which was brick heavy, ugly as sin, held together with duct tape but sounded superb and did its job for 3 years of abuse before finally dying on me last week. Bought a Toshiba Gigabeat F20, and its f**king crap. It distorts like f**k with the EQ, weedy bass (even using my own headphones as the bundled ones of course are useless as you'd expect) plus the software is terrible and totally buggy. Toshiba tech support is of course dire. Its going back to the shop. But what else to buy? I'm not keen on Ipod because I've heard they distort as soon as you apply a bit of bass and I don't like this #60 to replace a battery thing. Priorities are: 20gb at least. Good sound quality and a proper EQ cos I like to fiddle, robust enough to stand up to everyday use and preferably not have to send away to get the battery changed after 18 months like the Ipod. Any opinions gratefully recieved! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Sep 2005 01:48:32 +0100 From: Tim Subject: Re: [idealcopy] FINAL SUMMER CLEAROUT Oh I get it this is a Wire list right? ;) (No lets not start that again...it is the silly season after all innit) Reminds me what an extensive job WMO did of covering Wires back pages for a while. I wonder will happen when the last few CDs are gone? One thing that surprises me about these legal download services is that (apart from being disgustingly expensive for selling something that doesn't exist!) they don't capitalise on the desire for out-of-print music. Wire are still hip. Say in 15 years time Wire's profile wains...they become very unfashionable but a have a staunch hardcore of fans (much like say Lindisfarne or Toyah) have who want all the rare stuff and don't want to pay #100 on Ebay for the P'O album. I'd like to think he or she could just download it for a sensible fee. Unless Wire's profile surges again I doubt it will be cost effective to manufacture the WMO range as CDs again so presumably downloads are the future for much of this stuff. We'll see.... kevin eden wrote: > Very limited stocks of WMO and Origin titles left. 'Geogaddi' just didn't do it for me and didn't live up to the "A Beautiful Place in the Country EP" or the peel session. I didn't think much of 'Twoism' (their lost album) either and was glad I didn't pay silly price for it on ebay. That said..How much would I love Kate Bush to make an album with Boards of Canada?!!!! ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V8 #246 *******************************
