Ari/Derek,Ex LT and Mr. Moore for writing about the New Orleans situation. As our overseas compatriots might gather, Americans are once again outraged and embarrassed by our government. We had the resources, even with the war going on, to have an initial deployment of troops, communications, and survival supplies on site within 24 hours. We have two departments of our government who are dedicated to anticipating and organizing rescue/relief (FEMA and 'Homeland-cough-Security'). When the final body count is made, I am sure that the last several hundred will have died through neglect. (Let us not forget that this time last year we had four major hurricanes, and already another named storm is in the Caribbean). Here in Atlanta we had the disturbing spectacle of a gas panic, when people erroneously believed that automobile gasoline would run out. Lines of SUV's stretched out of the gas stations across streets, blocking traffic and driving gas prices artificially high. In some places people waited hours to get gas, and a woman on the local news said she was relieved to have filled up her SUV for $72.00 but would probably have to do so again by the end of the week. A large "up" for Kanye West, who loses points for being a christian but spoke for all human beings last night on national television. The current administration's support of white male conservatives has made an atmosphere in which racist comments, tendencies, and actions are much more tolerated than ever before in my lifetime. Their blind defense of the president, support of 'intelligent design' curriculum, segregation of love into acceptable and non acceptable forms, and their defensive stance when human beings point out better ways of doing things are the worst of values. Fuck Y'all. Americans, let's vote the fuckers out for good. Republicans, please own up to the atrocities and join the Americans. And, back to the drums and wires, New Orleans is the birthplace of much of the best in North American music. Neither jazz nor rock and roll would be what we now know and love without the people and culture of that city. It will be a while until the bon temps roulette. We thank everyone for their support, emotional, financial, and physical. Let us not disgrace ourselves further.
