((( Go on Mark... you know you want to ! It's gas - I'd only just been trawling through the old albums over the weekend, for the first time in years, and then just spotted the ad in The Wire this morning... last saw them in Trinity College in 1983. Enormously prolific in the early 80s - seemed to release an album almost monthly. High-water mark is a single called Invisibility which still sounds like nothing else. Are either of you going to see Luke Haines (ex-Auteurs etc) at the ICA on Thursday? He had a Wasp synth - crude monosynth with a touch-sensitive pad - which he used to play the bass lines. And some kind of cheapo bontempi organ with horrible 'bossanova' drum machine. The band's entire equipment was worth about 50 quid. >>((( Some songs on my favourite LP, Drumming The Beating Heart still make the hairs rise on the back of my neck. Songs about murderers, child molesters, terrorists and glam rock. Often all at the same time. The Auteurs arrived at the start of Britpop and almost won the Mercury prize. Rather like Wire being done for payola, this made them much more interesting - the Steve Albini-produced After Murder Park album is fantastic - one of my favourite 90s albums. He's also made solo albums (one as Baader Meinhof, which is entirely about the 70s German terrorists). Rock's Chris Morris, I guess. ((( I rather enjoyed Rust Red September.. though Back From The Rains was very pedestrian compared with previous output. That was 86 or so. Then I didn't hear anything till Saw You In Reminding Pictures from about 94-5, which was somewhat along the lines of the more exploratory stuff typified by the 1981 LP Pale Hands I Loved So Well (another old fave). Subsequent CDs were a bit more folksy and less inventive, somewhat repetitious, but had some good tunes nonetheless. > > >> Are either of you going to see Luke Haines > > (ex-Auteurs etc) at the ICA on > > ((( In a position of complete ignorance here - > what's > the deal on this guy Mark ?<< > > Cynical to the point of misanthropy.
