Anyone on the list know the good record shops nowadays, esp. in the Village/St. Marks/Chealsea/SoHo area? I suppose the MIA record is quite good although its hardly a classic (and this is hardly the sound of the streets either ...MIA is a good pal of ex Britpop toff Justin Frischmann and toast of Channel 4 Jarvis Cocker) I like Anthony but I think he doesn't quite have the tunes to match just yet...but has a really amazing 3rd or 4th record in him...bit early to be dishing out awards. The guy hardly needs the publicity...I went to see him the other week and I can't remember ever being asked for tickets as many times as I was that night. The rest are just Tesco 9.97 CD's..apart from the token jazz record (Polar Bear) and the token folkie thing (Seth Lakeman) and they won't win anyway. Previous winners: M People. Only with the music press effectively irrelevant nobody has stuck a label that sticks on the current wave of groups. The Boy Bands have disappeared and nobody noticed. At present nobody seems to have rediscovered Wire like they did during Brit Rock but I'd give that time. The success of so many bands so quickly on merit rather than hype must result in lots of bands toling out there getting a chance. GoTeam and Arcade Fire also offer a different direction and all them an alternative to Dad Rock, bad rap and Joss stone. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jul 2005 18:20:36 GMT From: "P J Kane" Subject: [idealcopy] (OT) going to Toronto sorry for the Off-topic message, but i was wondering if anyone here can offer some advice. it's a ways off, but i am heading to Toronto in early September for a little vacation time. looking for recommendations on: - - good record shops - - good restaurants/cafes/bars - - good bookstores - - anything else really cool to do while i am in the city i am staying with a friend who lives downtown near a trendy shopping area called The Annex, if that helps anyone know specifically where i will be at. but i will have locals who i can make drive me places... anyway, any help is much appreciated. you can email me off-list so as to not annoy the rest of the people here. thanks.
