Sadly, the 688 Club/Agora days were before my time. I was thinking about how much that suck these past couple of weeks when I read Party Out Of Bounds: The B-52's, R.E.M., And The Kids Who Rocked Athens, GA by Rodger L. Brown (he mentions older Athens bands playing at some of the now defunct Atlanta places back in the day). My prioritizing of this particular book to the top of my reading stack was inspired, of course, by the excellent Pylon show at The Earl (hey there, PJ). Yeah, most of Midtown Atlanta has been cleaned up now and taken over by Georgia Tech. Safer, but I wish that there were more venues to house the better bands that come to Atlanta these days. I'm still mourning the closing of Echo Lounge. I'm the resident political conservative of the Atlanta Idealcopyists, I suppose, but don't let that scare you off. I'm always up to go see a good show somewhere and I won't call the FCC if people curse around me. Is part of the studio - or gear from the studio - for sale? I surfed thru the English part of the site, and didn't see anything appropos. The usual eclectic mix up for this from the industry darlings to the downright obscure. Seems to be the kiss of death (Roni Size, Gomez) but good exposure if you are listed and don't win: The streets in particular have done well on being nominated and not winning. So on that basis I hope Coldplay win. With a bit of luck it will give the Go Team the wiff of publicity they could do with. But my money's on MIA. So, I did some Googling! http://www.intuitivemusic.com/content/view/1343/ Relevant excerpts: It has been informed by Can's Holger Czukay, in his official website, that the legendary Conny Plank electronic studio in Cologne will be sold or dissolved in the near future. This represents another big loss in modern culture since the studio is one of the most important spots related with the history of modern music. The original text is here: http://www.czukay.de/news/89/index.htm No details on price, etc. ^_^ Cheers, Paul ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jul 2005 22:06:53 +0100 From: "Keith Knight" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] o/t Mercury Awards MIA or The Magic Numbers I reckon, with Antony and the Johnsons as outsiders - although neither of the last two are especially British (although half the Magic Numbers were born here as was Antony). Which reminds me - it's time for the olde Halfway through the Year faves: LPs Funeral - The Arcade Fire - an album which sounded damn fine on first listen and then steadily improved. Chocked full of great songs. Far and away the best album I've heard all year. No Earthly Man - Alasdair Roberts - a severe album of Scottish death ballads sung uncompromisingly. Challenging, and why not. I'd rather he did his own stuff, but this is splendid too. Present - Van der Graaf Generator - for the fact that it exists at all as much as what's on it. Four good songs (out of six) and some great improvisations. Bang Bang Rock & Roll - Art Brut - sounds like a greatest hit set once you've seen them a couple of times. Witty, funny, observant. I am a Bird Now - Antony and the Johnsons - the most extraordinary voice since Jeff Buckley, albeit too close to Boy George for comfort. The record weaves a spell. Mother Daughter and Other Songs - Tunng - The best album I've heard this year from the Electrofolk (or whatever we're calling them) set - harmonies like CSN over dribbles of burbling noise, singing spooky songs. Human After All - Daft Punk - slammed on release but almost up to the peak of the last album - impossible not to warm to immediately. Like a stupid Kraftwerk. COMPILATION - The Collected Peel Session s- The Fall LIVE - Minimum - Maximum - Kraftwerk SINGLES Oh My God - Kaiser Chiefs Hounds of Love - Futureheads E-Pro - Beck Not a vintage year all told, although I'm not exactly plugged in. LIVE Van Der Graaf Generator - RFH Van Der Graaf Generator - Leicester Van Der Graaf Generator - Milan Van Der Graaf Generator - Shepherds Bush Empire A miracle - my favourite band back from the dead and as if they had never gone away. A power and intensity beyond credibility. Exhausting and exhilarating music to experience live. Gang of Four - SBE. And the Go4 too!!
