This is, apparently, going to happen at a bunch of Githead gigs (in fact, see the website for details of the first block of the autumn "tour", which also includes London), simply because it's rather tricky to take pictures of yourself while you're on the stage. One of the ideas with Githead is to be something of the opposite of Wire, in terms of online documentation and openness. The site already has bios on the band members (with discog selections by the band), a gigography/events calendar, free demo/live MP3s for download and a fairly substantial gallery. The "get an audience member to take some pics" thing only adds to this, providing the band with documentation of a gig that it cannot record itself. It sounds really good I think. I passed the link on to a friend who inadvertently opened two players which both played the song, just a fraction apart - he reckoned the original was disappointing after that. I've experimented a bit, and if you add a delay of 1.8 seconds onto it (in SoundForge or something like that) it *does* gain a certain charm, it's true. Anyway, this production malarkey set me thinking. I think I've rumbled on before on the list about how 'Entertainment' was a disappointment when it came out, because it was so flat compared to the Go4 live. Ironically, though it's been monkied around with no end, this remix strikes me as coming closer to the experience of the live shows. And speaking of production, my only grumble with Githead's product so far is that I think it has a bit of this 'not as good as they are live' syndrome about it. The production's somehow a bit too neat and tidy. Maybe this is inevitable if the producer is also in the band; I can imagine the pressure is on to maintain democracy, have everyone's parts equally well up in the mix all the way through, and not start pulling any producerly tricks such as running the guitarist's part backwards instead of forwards (for instance). Personally I'd like a bit more mischief in the production... any opinions? ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V8 #190 *******************************
