Glad Art Brut do it for you too. As for Live 8, I'm here fleeing Dido and the only thing I'm intending to specifically tune into is Pink Floyd and then only to see their body language. I suspect Madonna will be OK too. The acts seem to get less time than they did with Live Aid, so there's less chance of someone coming up with the definitive set as Queen did back in 85 - 25 minutes was just right for them. Bought it from Amazon UK, they said something about 17 pounds, but it doesn't weigh nearly that much. Still satisfyingly hefty. Read it in a couple of days, fascinated by the details of English post punk that I knew only through records. I was a massive PiL fan and felt this book was a vindication (albeit an unnecessary vindication) of the most meaningful thing in my life outside of food/clothes/shelter/love/sex. This is why I play music still, despite never making money or much attention: this music poured gasoline on the flame the Beatles/Stones lit. Possibly my non-Englishness (or age; 45) explains a complete disinterest in Human League/Soft Cell synth/twee/harmony bands, and those chapters seemed out of place compared to the revolutionary sounds of PiL, Go4, Throb. Gr., the Cabs, etc. They may have been post punk, but so were Motley Crue. I liked the history of the Scottish guitar bands, glad SST was outlined, and even enjoyed from a historical perspective the Trevor Horn stuff. 2. Re: Ideal Copy: To Be or not to Be. My vote is To Be. I enjoy the discussions, links and insights here and have since becoming a member. Not a fan of the football commentary, but the music input far outweighs the divergent chatter. Part of being a Wire fan, it seems to me, is community and camaraderie with like minded individuals, and I like to hear about other bands as well. Living in Atlanta, Ga. offer few opportunities for current live music, thus, for example, the recent link to Art Brut was very well received. (Aside to the world: Apologies for our moronic/satanic 'leadership'..there ARE humans over here; please don't judge us too harshly...we do what we can). 3. Original Live Aid surprised me with sets from Yoko Ono and Fela jamming with Ruben Blades...anyone know of anything cool for Live 8? 4. finally, on topic: As mentioned, if this is old news, consider it a reminder. Sadly, the post-punk scene in Atlanta hasn't been the same since the Echo Lounge closed a few months ago. (Echo Lounge = where I saw Wire, The Fall, Mission Of Burma, The Chameleons UK, Camper Van Beethoven, etc. etc. over the past few years). There are still some good shows out there, but I haven't been to many as of late. Devo did put out a killer performance at this year's Music Midtown here in Atlanta. That performance, plus the Pixies, Bloc Party, and Interpol, made the festival well worth it. Devo brought out Booji Boy for the performance of "Beautiful World" at the show's end. This Thursday, I'll be going out to The Earl to see the reunited Pylon. I've missed the recent Pylon shows in Athens over the past year, but have heard some amazing things and can expect a performance comparable to the one that I saw them play back in 1989. It'll be worth my drive from Smyrna. Other than that, yeah, the live scene is pretty non-eventful right about now. Thanks for the recommendation on Rip It Up And Start Again. This Atlanta native has been considering buying the book from Amazon.co.uk and will probably do so (especially now that The Armchair Guide To The Cure is now available in the U.K. and won't be available here for a few months; I'll probably order both books simultaneously). Jason P.S. It's been awhile since I've really participated in Ideal Copy to some degree, but I try to read the digest every day. Hello to everyone that I've met previously. Things are going well in this neck of the woods and I'm glad to say that, as of this morning's weigh-in, I've lost 115 pounds since the beginning of 2005. It's quite amazing what six days in the gym and proper food will do and I'm very close to my goal now. At any rate, my feet don't hurt as much standing up through general admission concerts and that's a good thing. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Jul 2005 15:20:57 -0700 (PDT) From: Ari Subject: [idealcopy] O.T: I just ordered............. ......the armchair cure and rip it up and was informed it'll take about 4-6 weeks to ship,(amazon.co.uk) if it ain't out of stock. now that's what I call service (not)............. Actually, that usually means they're kinda out of stock - at least in their immediate warehouse. They're ordering it from their supplier. Hopefully, the supplier still has it in stock. ^_^ > now that's what I call service (not)............. A > Sorry about the delay. Usually Amazon.co.uk has been very top-notch in their service for me. And, the Royal Mail delivers to Seattle fairly quickly - within a week or two. Amazon.fr has had the longest shipping time - it took over a month for a package to get here - and of course, it was defective. So, it took another month to send it back to France, and then another month for the replacement to arrive! ^_^ Cheers, Paul ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Jul 2005 03:51:41 GMT From: "P J Kane" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] In My Room << Stop by my podcast last week for a load of sarcasm and patriotic America love >> wow, great setlist. i'd love to hear it. but i don't have an Ipod. can i still download it and listen to it on my computer? It's jam packed with jolly nice people, ( who take no offence at being flamed - unless it's really out-of-hand :). They also have a broad spectrum of interests which would probably be impossible to replicate in another format. Another positive of this thread, (for me, anyway), has been the number of self-confessed lurkers and seldom-posters who crawl out of the woodwork and reveal the number of like-minded individuals they have virtually met. ... and nobody EVER said anything nasty about Mike Thorne! I dare you. Glenn. ------------------------------ End of idealcopy-digest V8 #179 *******************************
