Hi Folks! I have returned! After a long absence I have found time to check back in with you old geezers! ))) Welcome back Norm ! Great to have you amongst us again... It's a nice package with all 24 Peel Sessions and a booklet that pays touching tribute to the late great John Peel and his contributions to bringing attention to The Fall. It'll take me a while to really digest everything on the set, but it seems so far to be an ideal companion piece to last year's 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong compilation. If you're planning on getting the entire Fall catalogue via Sanctuary Records reissues, much of this Peel Sessions box set may be redundant (both 1978 Peel Sessions are included on my reissue of Live At The Witch Trials), but, for now, it's a great set to have. ((( Gotta be worth a Ryanair cheapie, having never seen 'em, and playing one of my favourite records of all time... how can I miss that... though if some enlightened Dublin promoter gets 'em over I won't need to make the trip. Though I wish they'd do a warm up, it'd be better to catch 'em in a more intimate setting. I've just been trawling various sites (inc. GO4's own site, which is thin on info) for the gen on european gigs and the the barbie show's the only one mentioned. Thankfully UBU are playing Dublin a few days before GO4, really looking forward to that. Some blast from the past that week is going to be. Fergus __________________________________ Yahoo! Just as well you didn't tune in then, Norm, as very few of your 'wish-list' got any coverage whatsoever (even on the BBC3 stuff I've watched so far). Personally I couldn't be arsed to sit through the hours of crud (ColdPlay, Keane etc) to catch a glimpse of the few moments of worthwhile coverage. So I gave it a swerve! If I did watch, it would have only been to see Interpol (Also saw them live in San Francisco), Maximo Park (just out of curiosity), Echo & The Bunnymen (for the nostalgia trip), The Kills, Tom Vek, Nine Black Alps. Also 'Be You Own Pet' from Nashville. Has anyone heard 'Fire Department' by them? Is that riff ripped off from 'Boredom' by the Buzzcocks or am I just imagining it? Good tune though.... RE What to play at games, besides those Wire track's mentioned............. It's hard work finding stuff. There's the obvious pressure to play 'current' stuff, so , for my sins I have to borrow CD's from some terrace 'regulars' , so it's really rather down to what they have. To my shame, I've even given in to requests for kak like Coldsailor, Starplay, Kasabian and the like, and when I *really* can't be arsed swapping loads of CD's about, I've even used (copies of) those ubiquitous "The best indie album in the world, honest" on K-Tel or whatever, featuring folk like Oasis, Blur, Supergrass et al. Occasionally, those freebies that seem to be inside every Sunday paper throw up odd gems to be used, even if some are a bit 'vintage', :- last year those sources yielded various Strangler's tracks, 'Teenage Kicks' and a heap of other stuff that I can't recall. For some reason, the people most likely to ask for stuff *do* seem to be aging punks/new wavers, and for them I've got a double CD with shedloads of good stuff on it. All the old geezers never ask for anything, but can be relied on to moan about everything I play nontheless. The two tracks that occasioned the most complaints,( played by request I might add) were Motorhead's "Ace of Spades" and The Wildhearts' "Caffiene Bomb", although "Take your daughter to the Slaughter" (Iron Midden) and "We care a lot" (Faith No more) did well in that regard ! A couple of old guys kept hassling me to play some "marching band music like they used to have at games"......It's funny, but I haven't seen or heard from them again since I played Souza's "Liberty Bell" [aka the Monty Python theme tune] and dedicated it to "Stadtler and Waldorf, The two old lads that are always giving me earache........... IT's largely a matter of what I can get away with:- if a track charted , even if it *was* only at No 47, it makes it easier to justify...... given the age range of those at the games, I can mix in allsorts of stuff classic soul/motown stuff and no-one turns a hair, but when I tried a reggae tack ("Police and Thieves" and Augustus Pablo's "King Tubby meets the rockers uptown") it didn't go down that well.................. I've managed to sneak in stuff like Magazine's "Song from Under the Floorboards", Television's "Days" and similar 'not hugely offensive' stuff. Even "Holiday in Cambodia" managed to slip through without too many howls of protest..... I can get away with loads of things before a game, but have to be more circumspect at half-time. ;-) MY favourite moment from last year though was when the manager was getting lots of grief from fans (including me), I played The Clash's "Shall I stay or shall I go" followed by Steve Miller's "Take the Money and Run"............. As half man half buiscuit played hereabouts a couple of years back, some of their stuff has been used, too:- "The referee's alphabet" is tailormade, as is "The light at the end of the tunnel (is the light of an oncoming train)"- given the financial state we're in, it's perfect. ;-) I *really* wanted to play "Fat Man" by some old hippies called someone-or-other Tull, but chickened out. If you'd seen the wastelines of our bunch when they came back from their summer hols, you'd understand....... BTW, maybe some list-member can help me out with this one:- a couple of tunes I'd like to get my hands on for games are : The Pirhanas version of "Tom Hark" (Yeh, I know it's a cliche, but in my defence I've refused to play "We are the champions", "Simply the best" OR Blur's "Song Two" yet)..... More seriously though, I'd *really* like to know if any of you have a copy of "Driving away from home " by It's Immaterial:- or for that matter, "Gigantic raft in the Phillippines" or *anything* by this band ?? "I'm pretty sure "Driving away from home" sold a fair few, and even managed a chart placing, so it's just possible someone here has it? I'd be grateful for a copy...................... As I said, the club don't have a CD budget.............. :-( Keith A wrote: > In my winter guise of tune-master at my local footy club, I have to find enough 'singles' material to fill an hour before the game, and 15 or so minutes for the half-time break > Regarding the musical diet the suffering masses on the terraces got treated to last season included a sprinkling by our boys, inc:- " Dot Dash"," Map Ref....", "Outdoor Miner"(both versions), "Options R", and on the last day of the season, "Kidney Bingoes", mainly because MOJO magazine were kind enough to include it on a post-punk 'free' CD.......which was handy, as I've only got the vinyl of ABIAC. Great stuff Derek. Just back from a 20/20 cricket match (Northants v Somerset, where my lads - Somerset, natch, being a good West Country boy - - won on the last ball) where snatches of music are de rigeur when batsmen walk out (possibly their own choices as these rung the changes a little - nothing unexpected, mind), score boundaries or are out - which depressingly usually occasions 'Another one bites the dust'. So I got to hear snatches of 'I Feel Good' 'Song 2', 'Hey Ya' etc, although oddly last year's favourite, 'Let me entertain you' didn't get an airing. Is Robbie's star on the wane? My touchstone for football tannoy entertainment was irreplaceably set on the terraces of Twerton Park in the mid 60s watching Bath City when the only record they ever seemed to play was 'Rag Doll' by the Four Seasons. Every bloody match.
