I stick to cute girls like Annie (whose Annimal recycles Funkadelic Kraftwerk and Kylie, spitting out one of the more enjoyable discs of the year for me) or Ayumi Hamasaki for my 'guilty pleasures' Besides, Ayumi has a guitarist who would shred The Edge to effin ribbons if they ever met in a dark alley Meanwhile , on the home front, Billy Corgan has been remarkably effective getting his name out in the world press, I only wonder if the appeal iws still there for the teens who empathized with his nasal whine now that they are all puching 40 too. Musically, the album would be right up many of our alleys (but I have never been able to get past the voice - and I have heard it longer than most) Other releases of note: Pine*Am - Pull the Rabbit Ears - Shibuyapop with an experimental edge The new Brian Eno - Wonderful to hear him sing again - but the album is marred for me by flaccid guitar which reminds me of something forgettable This week I have revisited Hall and Oates - War Babies - I had totally forgotten this one (undeservedly) Todd leant some nice guitar and production to a very ambitious vocal duo early on Prefab Sprout - Jordan: The Comeback A brilliant album that sounds almost better today We Let the Stars go and Doo Wop in Harlem still choke me up ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jun 2005 14:00:36 +0100 From: Norm Fasey Subject: [idealcopy] On Returning... Hi Folks! I have returned! After a long absence I have found time to check back in with you old geezers! Spent 9 months in San Francisco in 2003 where I saw Wire play the Great American Music Hall. What a coincidence eh! Being in the right city at the right time that is! Also saw them down at Brighton Concorde before I left. Came back and then spent 9 months in sunny Basingstoke. Hmmmm which one did I prefer??? Basingstoke or San Francisco??? What's been happening then chaps? Whats the latest? apart from the rumours of Bruce Leaving and GitHead that is? In my winter guise of tune-master at my local footy club, I have to find enough 'singles' material to fill an hour before the game, and 15 or so minutes for the half-time break (minus the time taken to give the raffle numbers out, and name-check the sponsors), and it ain't easy:- a lot of current 'chart' music just isn't available, as the club don't have a CD budget, no-one at the club wants to go trawling P2P sites, and I certainly won't buy trash just to play at games, and save them money, so there's a limit to how many great old punk and post-punk singles I can get away with, so I was actually glad when a pal of mine offered me a copy of "Intergalactic Sonic 7-inchers" or whatever the Ash compilation is called ........ (The "b-sides" disk is called cosmic fragments , or somesuch:- 'cosmic' my arse: 'tis about as 'cosmic' as a Coronation Street pensioner washing the dishes and feeding the cat, but hey, I digress)........ Anyhow, the point is , I've had a lot of time to get to know the collection, and OK, so stuff like "Girl from Mars" , "Burn, baby, burn" and "There's a star" still get approving nods from those in the target age group actually listening at games, and I can actually sit through them, too, mainly I suspect on account of their brevity, or in the case of "Star" the restrained guitar solo & nice orchestration, such as it is, a lot of the other tracks just fly past and stubbornly refuse to 'stick'. Their earlier stuff was just a racket; not that that in itself is a bad thing, but it's a sort of pointless kind of racket IMHO. When they got a 2nd guitar, it improved them a tad, but not so much I get the compilation out and play it for myself during the 'close season'. [With a Cruyff turn, the lad swerves ON-TOPIC !!] Regarding the musical diet the suffering masses on the terraces got treated to last season included a sprinkling by our boys, inc:- " Dot Dash"," Map Ref....", "Outdoor Miner"(both versions), "Options R", and on the last day of the season, "Kidney Bingoes", mainly because MOJO magazine were kind enough to include it on a post-punk 'free' CD.......which was handy, as I've only got the vinyl of ABIAC. Hope the MCPS get the cheque in the post, boys....... ;-) Keith Knight wrote: It's a cumulative thing for me with Ash. They've quietly put out nearly a dozen or so really enjoyable pop songs without me ever really being aware they were doing it............... get hold of that singles collection from last year and you'll realise how much enjoyable stuff is on there. None of it is up there with Buzzcocks or Smiths best (or Teen Spirit come to that) but it's a remarkably coherent and enjoyable body of work. Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mr Gahan *still* holds the crown for his "looking like a simpleton breaking in his new shoes".........;-) Hahaha! I know one shouldn't laugh at his own lines, but I'd forgot about that! ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jun 2005 23:54:47 +0100 From: "Keith A" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] television non-transmission:- Ash ? > In my winter guise of tune-master at my local footy club, I have to find enough 'singles' material to fill an hour before the game, and 15 or so minutes for the half-time break > Regarding the musical diet the suffering masses on the terraces got treated to last season included a sprinkling by our boys, inc:- " Dot Dash"," Map Ref....", "Outdoor Miner"(both versions), "Options R", and on the last day of the season, "Kidney Bingoes", mainly because MOJO magazine were kind enough to include it on a post-punk 'free' CD.......which was handy, as I've only got the vinyl of ABIAC. That's excellent, Derek. I've often wondered what you play at the game. Of course you could always do what Wrexham did for years and play Pilot's Magic on the way out to cheer the sorry lot on their way home! Or, what happened a season or so ago, get the wife of your star player (Carlos Edwards*), who just happens to be a budding singer, to come on at half time and perform a spirited if ultimately pointless cover of the Pointer Sisters I'm So Excited on the pitch. Unfortunately, the opposing fans were less amenable to it than the biased locals, though at least I can't recall hearing any cries of 'Get your t*ts out for the boys', which I guess is some kind of progress!! *Now gone to Luton dammit - great ball control but seems to have lost the knack of crosiing since he came back from a bad injury sustaianed whilst playing for Trinidad & Tobago. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Jun 2005 00:48:48 +0100 From: "Keith Knight" Subject: RE: [idealcopy] On Returning... Welcome back indeed Norm. I saw Be Your Own Pet last week - reasonably interesting although I preferred The Grates on the night - an energetic three piece from Oz, whose lead singer is only just behind The Go!
