They've quietly put out nearly a dozen or so really enjoyable pop songs without me ever really being aware they were doing it. Like you I first saw them 10 years ago and was really taken with 'Girl from Mars' (as I was on telly at the weekend) but then only kept them on the radar. But get hold of that singles collection from last year and you'll realise how much enjoyable stuff is on there. None of it is up there with Buzzcocks or Smiths best (or Teen Spirit come to that) but it's a remarkably coherent and enjoyable body of work.<< Hey, can I play too - I'm also a member of the I-saw-Ash-10-years-ago club! I did think they had their moments back then - unlike a lot of Britpop bands they did actually rock. GfM was one of those insidious singles that you couldn't believe hadn't been ripped off (wow, cop that double negative!) from somewhere very obvious - but is all original (Green Day's Basket Case is another). Also thought Goldfinger was a great single - though after that they didn't really deliver, and dropped off the radar. they seemed to get a bit... soppy. Recent punk-metal style stuff has left me cold too - though I don't doubt the value of some of their singles. I guess the thing that puts me off is their endless presence on "Festival TV shows" and the like - I have the same problem with their most obvious contemporaries, Supergrass (another Britpop band that could rock - and a band that has also made some good singles). This week C4 is showing highlights of the recent Hyde Park gigs. Featured bands include... Ash. And Supergrass. You know I just don't get it. People who know me and accept the fact that I love a good tune expect me to like Ash, but as I never tire of saying "Yes I do like a good tune. And please tell me when Ash manage to write one". > And now to Primal Scream............ > when the audience refused to worship at his semi-coherent altar, he went > into overdrive:- "Ralph Nader's gonna try and impeach Bush:- whaddya > think of that? The only thing I saw - apart from Basement Jaxx who I switched off - was Saw NO blunder their way through Transmission and that was pretty much it. Personally I hate the way that everyone's life is supposed to stop for Glastonbury. I'm sure if I went I'd have a good time, but I really don't need to hear DJ's talking about how they're going for what seems like an eternity beforehand. It's some pop groups in a field. It's not the coming of a new messiah. And it's not Wire in Brighton. But talking of New Order, I don't mind the latest album. I'm ashamed to say I even like the one that has been described as being a bit Ace of Bass!! That he's an over-rated clown to an over-rated clown who knows a good tune when he hears one! Actually, talking of COTR and Elton, the Born To Boogie DVD is excellent. I could fawn for hours about the two live shows (the one on disc one is the better of the two IMO - Cadilac is soooo funky!), the bit where Tony Visconti tells Rolan that there's not a day when he doesn't think about Rolan's dad, the amazing early Ty Rex clip of Sara Crazy Child (worth the admission alone for me), etc etc, but I'll stick to the thread and just say that Elton's piano playing on COTR is awesome. He should have stuck to that instead of sharing Bernie Taupins shite lyrics with us. np MBV - Loveless ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jun 2005 01:03:33 +0100 From: "Keith A" Subject: Re: [idealcopy] television non-transmission >>Hey, I didn't see any of this, but after Derek's account here I genuinely wish I had. Did anyone make a case for the relentless stamina and attitude of a very decent female on drums from the White Stripes set Thats my Highlight of theWeekend Kaiser Chiefs too! COLDPLAY Please explain what i need to see to make a case not to purchase the latest CD Before i go out and buy it please?? am i missing something? Babyshambles// Razorlight(Boomtown rats 2000)// Wainwright can all go do one big one F*** (Didn't catch the rest) Primal Scream i stopped enjoying their stuff, when BG Started to Plagarise CAN Without redress (Moving on up Lyric 100% lifts from Can's, Yoo Doo Right) Mavers, although eccentric (i too champion eccentricity squarepeg round hole music believe it!), was never okay for me after Mavers selected a large chunk of Vitriol in print for John Powers in the Late 90's, CAST any day over LA's, Mavers go and do an LP on Your Jack Jones! A couple of the BBC Studio tent specials were quite interesting An Acoustic Duel on Saturday had me in Awe and a spanish Band was also captivating for a few minutes In hindsight i reckon it was the shape of the singers size & shape of her Breasts in her top which captivated me more than what the girl was singing! Not much i know mostly rhetoric but thats the Music, mostly forgettable. I Wouldn't mind a Gong Bath though.Did anyone catch that moment? another the question................ What a pile of crap that band are. I never thought I'd see a band whose bassist was ripping off Adam Clayton. And the lyrics: "How long do I have to climb, Up on the side of this mountain of mine?" Fuck me, is Dolores Cranberry to Coldplay what Tony Asher and Van Dyke Parks are to Brian Wilson? - --------------------- I really enjoyed that Mark, as usual. I know I'm in a minority here but I do listen to Coldplay, I own all three CDs (largely because of my wife) and it is a not-so secret indulgence of mine. I think I listen to them for the same reason I buy a candy-apple at the Canadian National Exhibition every year-- it's sickly sweet, marginally sustainable, but the best experience of the day. I have to say, I really wouldn't use "clued-in" and "Jo Whiley" in the same sentence, unless I was saying 'one of the least clued-in presenters is...'. She's always gotten terribly excited by the headliners, regardless of whether they are any good or not. It was something that used to irritate Peel (man, he was seriously missed), whereupon he'd trudge off to watch something worthwhile instead, while Whiley sat there gobsmacked at some run-of-the-mill bollocks. > It's a cumulative thing for me with Ash. Likewise. They do some good pop songs nothing spectacular, but still significantly better than much of the dross out there. Hatherley's solo album is also worth a look if you think Ash are all right again, it has some good pop songs, a few of which are better than anything in the Ash catalogue. And of the small chunks of Glasto that I saw, the band has come a long way since I saw them at Reading c. 1998 and, unlike the shambolic New Order and abysmal Primal Scream (largely due to BG), they at least seem to give a shit.
