Unless they drove very quickly from London to Manchester, cos I saw them at the latters Academy II last night. As did Derek. He'll vouch for me ; ) And whilst they didn't totally blow me away, they were very good. All this for a band whos second album I enjoy taking the piss out of even now - twenty seven years later! But Television deserve to be classed as one of the great groups just on the evidence of their (still remarkable, still stunning) debut Marquee Moon. And Tom Verlaine is undoubtedly one of the great guitarists in my book. As Id never seen them before, its fair to say I was, well, excited Anyway, on they strolled, with only bassist Fred Smith looking like hes aged anywhere near as much as he should have - though even he looked pretty cool in a Tony Soprano kind of way. Tom looked liked an English eccentric his teeth are so Un-American that hed be hauled in by the authorities if McCarthy was still alive - whilst Richard Lloyd still has that preppy look, despite the increasing forehead. But its drummer Billy Ficca who wins Televisions Dorian Gray Award though he hardly looks a day older. And they still sounded pretty fresh too. Admittedly it took them a couple of number to get going We always practice in England said a surprisingly cheerful Tom by way of explanation, and with Richard Lloyd playing most of the riffs and lead lines whilst Tom strummed and sang on these opening numbers, I wondered if Tom had lost that knack of playing those incredible strangulated solos that sounded like no-one ever. Or maybe he couldnt be bothered, or maybe keeping Richard happy is part of the deal I thought. And then, third number in, they played Venus and Tom played one of those solos, about ten foot away from me. It was spine tingling stuff one of those Lowdown at the RFH moments, where you feel almost privileged to see a band youve loved so long (and who because of time and circumstance youd thought youd never get to see) play one of their classic tracks. Apart from the Marquee Moon tracks (more later!) we got 1880 Or so and Call Mr Lee from the self-titled third album and quite a few tracks I didnt know its been so long time since I heard the Television LP that I presumed they must be off that and Id forgotten them, but apparently not. Hopefully this means a new album sometime it certainly sounded as if it could be the business on last nights display with a slow, slightly bluesy (well if Television could sound bluesy!) number probably the highlight of the new stuff. As with the old Television stuff, there were lots of long instrumental passages passages that showed that Tom isnt the only great guitarist in the band Lloyd is almost his equal with lots of solos that add tension to the music and despite their technical proficiency, only once bordered on the wanky for me. But what about Marquee Moon I hear you ask. Well it certainly didnt dominate proceedings like I expected - apart from Venus we also got Prove It, See No Evil (with that simple opening riff sounding especially great) and to close matters, an almost inevitable Marquee Moon, which was again inevitably probably the highlight of the gig. After that it was a quick encore of Glory that was fairly anti-climactic not because it was off the dreaded Adventure album (I jest, folks!), but because after MM it sounded, well, unsubstantial. Still, if the golden rule of showbiz is leave an audience wanting more, then Television certainly succeeded. What about Guiding Light, Foxhole, Little Johnny Jewel, etc, etc? What about them, says the part of me that enjoyed the fact that Television didnt just show off their past, though admittedly there was another part of me that thought You didnt play Friction, you bastards! PS Got the setlist though it's not totally accurate as Venus was definitely the 3rd number. Here it is (as written) Flower Spasm Venus 1880 Kinks Song Balloon The Sea Prove It Call Mr Lee Shirly Persia See No Evil Marquee Moon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jun 2005 03:46:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Wireviews Subject: [idealcopy] Time for an Ideal Copy Upgrade? > I don't own the list nor Wireviews but I would like to start the > debate about what the list would feel about moving IdealCopy > to a forum page on say the Wireviews website I'm not entirely sure that'd be the best thing for the group. If it were to happen, though, it would need people to moderate it and to set it up, because I don't have the time to deal with such things right now. (And seeing as the Wireviews kitty is exactly zero, I don't really have funds to spend on the site, bar the annual hosting charges and domain registration.) Then down to the third fret and repeat. Then down to the second fret and finally to a standard E shape. Etc. The Wire version is pretty similar, though a lot slower. So, in an effort to bolster the Wire-related chat on list, my opinion on Githead's Profile. I'm enjoying it much more than the preceding EP. 'Little Box Of Magic' is a splendidly catchy track. Malkas voice adds a welcome touch of variety. Shame I couldn't hear her voice at the QEH gig. 'They Are' is my current fave on the CD. Colins vocal has something of an Eno-like delivery to it on this one. Colins said in a recent email that he hoped to be setting up some more UK dates for Githead "Obviously having the fact we can be providing excuses for IC list nights out will be a bit focus for us :)" Cheers all, Mark. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Jun 2005 18:51:12 +0100 From: Andrew Walkingshaw Subject: [idealcopy] quiet list Hi, all - Not all of us who aren't posting much have left the list.
