Am I the only one who is beginning to wonder if this list needs a bit of rethink? Its all getting a bit parochial and cosy...so Un-Wire like. I've met some grand people here, and I've got drunk with, been to gigs with, done creative things and even been physically assualted by people from this list who I wouldn't otherwise have met. I've also gotten lots of great information, discovered loads of new music and had ridiculous arguments about ridiculous things! Its all been worth it! However, I feel the list ain't what it used to be. This is an increasingly closed community...and its shrinking. It used to be stimulating and a forum for new ideas triggered by Wirespace Thinking! We're not attracting new members and when we do I suspect they soon get put off by endless OT posts, inter-member patter and in-jokes. (And yes I know I'm as guilty as anyone) With the greatest respect for our host, who has done a grand job over the years, I wonder if it is time to move on from the 'mailing list' format? I feel thats the only way to get more new members and get us back on topic....witness the lack of discussion about Githead for example. I don't own the list nor Wireviews but I would like to start the debate about what the list would feel about moving IdealCopy to a forum page on say the Wireviews website, like the New Order one: http://www.neworderonline.com/Forums/ N.P. The Banshees' 'A Kiss In The Dreamhouse' which is the sort of record I would never have bothered to check out were it not for this list! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jun 2005 19:41:39 -0700 (PDT) From: Ari Subject: [idealcopy] Time for an Ideal Copy Upgrade? Tim: >>Am I the only one who is beginning to wonder if this list needs a bit of rethink? Its all getting a bit parochial and cosy...so Un-Wire like.<< Somewhat agree with Tim, even though I'm as guilty as the next man for O.T's, rambling and the like. The problem would be what to 'replace' it with, an open forum of the ilk of the NO site would open you up to getting emails from anyone that clicks to the site and clicks on a members email tab: (I tried it on the NO site)I for one get enough emails as it is and enough spam without incurring more. Also, the NO list looks a lot like the Wilco list which has so many members (several hundred) that you'd never get to read them all and you'd never 'touch base' with someone like we do here, and form a relationship of any kind,y'all would be like strangers, and that would be a shame. One of the resons I gave for leaving when my health turned was that Wire are no more, the Shriekback list died for lack of subject matter/ any real reason to exist anymore, even though it was fun whilste it lasted. This list 'is' in danger of doing the same which is, I suspect, why we post other topics as well.if not for any other reason than to keep up some sort of interest in something. how many times can we re-hash the same subject/topic? I think the only reason I did decide to remain here is 'because' it's become cozy, I feel at home with all of you, and this is wrong, it's not a friendship list it's a Wire list, it's going to be interesting to see how this conversation goes.
