Old Mr Gotobed (by Sheila McCullagh - stage 3 reading programme!) tells us that Mr Gotobed lives in Puddle Lane, gets up at 7am, has his brekkie at 8, dinner at 11, goes to bed at noon, doesn't get up till he sees the moon and - wait for it - when the moon shines down the lane he goes back to bed again. Not a mention of any farming, let alone playing his kit. No wonder nothing's getting done! "Take their [Geldof/Bono] response to the debt-relief package for the world's poorest countries that the G7 finance ministers announced 10 days ago. Anyone with a grasp of development politics who had read and understood the ministers' statement could see that the conditions it contains - enforced liberalisation and privatisation - are as onerous as the debts it relieves. But Bob Geldof praised it as "a victory for the millions of people in the campaigns around the world" and Bono pronounced it "a little piece of history". Like many of those who have been trying to highlight the harm done by such conditions - especially the African campaigners I know - I feel betrayed by these statements. Bono and Geldof have made our job more difficult." later A ************************************************************************* The contents of the e-mail and any transmitted files are confidential and intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom they are addressed. Love the dismissive line 'anyone with a grasp of development politics..." In other words everone else is dumb but we insiders.(otnly wtf have you being doing for 20 years!) As to the economic arguments, Monbiot forgot of course to mention that relieving debt is also to ensure the money for debt repayment is used for education and health, but then why undermine a good story. Be interesting to know how Mondiot intends to economically revive these countries. Like State nationalisation which has already led to the profits disappearing into various generals Swiss bank accounts.
